  • New to the forum and to aquariums

Hi all, my name is Matt and I'm a double major at the University of Houston in Architecture and Environmental Design. I have started my own airsoft team, work on/drag race my 2001 Z/28 SBC Police Interceptor, and love to go fishing (been a CCA member since I can remember). I have just recently became interested in aquariums, and want to start a Amazon themed tank. May be aiming alittle high for my first one, but I purchased a 55 gallon tank and am currently gathering the necessary equipment to start the fishless cycling process. I eventually want a planted tank, but for now I'm just goint to get the fish in it. Glad I found this local site. Thanks.

Welcome to the site! Give us some details on where you're at with your setup and which type of South American fish you're looking to keep.

Well, so far I have the tank...I'm picking up some lids with lights, a couple of filters and an air pump in the next couple of days. I plan on going with a sand substrate, because I feel it looks more natural. I was hoping to go with Peacock Bass, since they were the fish that made me want an aquarium (as an avid fisherman, I've always wanted to take a trip to the amazon to catch one), but have since realized that my tank is most likely too small. I've though about buying juviniles, and selling them when the outgrow the tank, but I dunno...sounds like a bad idea. But there are other South American Cichlids.

Peacock Bass are cool, they grow quick, but honestly they are hard to get rid of once you have them big because they NEED a big tank quick, like a 7ft 210 or bigger..
You should be concentrating on keeping fish which gets to be no larger than about 5" total size and to keep no more than about 12 fish in that tank of that size.
There are a ton of different SA cichlids you can get that will look beautiful on that size tank.

Firemouth, Blue Acara, or other fish of similar size, or you could go with something like dwarf cichlids like the Apistogramma family of fish. There are just so many out there.
Take some time to figure out what you would like to do and then many here can tell you where to get them and if they would work well for your tank

That's what I figured. I've been looking around at different fish, so hopefully by the time I have the tank set up I'll know what I want. Thanks for all the help, and I'll see ya'll around the forum.

Welcome to the Box! South American fish are so much fun, because they can be so personal. I had a 55gallon set up for a few and decided to go with 75 gallon instead. the 75 is the same lenght and height, but it is 18" wide instead of the 12" 55gallon. Check out Red Severums and Geophagus and Gymnogeophagus...these are all really cool fish to keep. see ya around.

Welcome to the box, maybe we should call it the padded cell ???
You will love a planted SA tank. Angels are great for beginners. And the selection of more difficult treasures is immense.

Houston is on surface water and it is hard and high pH. RainForest fishes (Asian/South American) like soft, low pH water. So it's a little extra work but well worth the effort.

I have a planted 55+ tetra tank. Had it for a few years now. Absolutely calming. But I'm getting rid of it now.

Just bought a 105g to replace it with. Same width - 4', but a little taller and 18" deep. The extra depth is great for layout of big pieces of drift wood and plants.

The FishBox family is a great source of information and opinions. Welcome to the family.

He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'
