The closer you can get to your fishes natural enviroment with food, aquascape, water condition, and lighting...that will give the best color.
Its nothing that can be done for natural sunlight, so you just got to work with what you have.
One very important factor is Genetics. you want to find a really good breeder and look at his bloodlines. Then you'll know if the fry your getting is topnotch or some harvested crap.
Food, I agree with everyone here, that NLS and Dainichi are the top two pellet foods for any cichlid out there. I would put NLS above Dainichi.
