  • Fish ID help - Found in a Ditch at my Work

I found these fish living in a Ditch at my work. The water is not brackish. I work about 2-3 miles from Armand Bayou Park in Pasadena.

The Male fish have orange bellies, and Pearl Electric Blue on their backs. There is a black moon shape on their caudal fins. The blue is actually more intense as you see in the first photo there is another male in the top left.

The Female fish are Silver fish with Brown Marbeling on their sides.

They are rather agressive to each other.

Just curious, because I never seen this kind in there before. I've seen lots of perch and sailfin mollies, and other minnow guppy like fish, but never these guys.

    Thanks for any help.

Those are in the drainage ditches by my house too. My kids used to bring them home to put in their tanks. I never id'd them but thought they were a type of killie.

Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? Ask nick, the first one is a wild green molly I believe and the second one is what people use to take care of algae.... the name escapes me right now.

Im not talking about those mosquito fish.

Some kind of Pupfish or Sheepshead Minnows is what Mary Beth told me.

'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

Sheepshead minnow aka mudminnow. Actually one of the pupfish type of killifish. They can live in fresh, brackish, or saltwater. They are very common in the saltmarshes and tidal pools in Galveston and Freeport. The males get this nice metallic blue patch on their backs.

After the photos I would say Sheepshead Minnow.

Thanks Bob, Nick, and Mary Beth!!

I captured a few on the first HLA collection trip and really enjoyed them in a 29g tank w/ local plants.
