  • my oscars are spawning

it's the two in my avatar. the albino is the female. I knew something was coming from their behavior, but I didn't really expect them to breed. BUt I'm watching it as I type this.

Well the average adult Oscar lays between 500-3000 eggs. You did say you had a 50 grow out tanks correct ?

They hatch in three to seven days depending upon temperature

My daughters had a pair of oscars in a 75g tank.
They spawned and on the 3rd day, ate the eggs (3 times).
On the third time I noticed that both were laying eggs.
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

If fertile, the eggs will hatch in about 72 hours and you will start seeing the black dots and a tail. Another 48 hours they will look like fry with a huge egg sack, and about 7-10 days they will be free swimming but will all clump together in a big clump. If you keep mom and dad involved you will end up with about you will end up with somewhere around 100 young who will last for you, if you have a 50% hatch rate (ie makes it 7 days)
You are going to want to think about removing them from their parents in about 14-21 days from now. At this point they will be eating crushed flake or something like NLS grow, and grow they will. They will reach 3 inches in about 3 months...

So the worst has happened, I woke up this morning and, just as I thought might happen, the slate is bare and has been moved. Oh well. I'll do a water change when I get home from work and see if that triggers anything

WHat do I need to do to help the fry live. I've heard about pulling the eggs, but I'm not sure exactly what to do. PhishPhreek, Zulaab, any advice?
