  • advice before i buy clout

ok guys, heres the deal... my flowerhorn had a hernia, and has the white stringy poop problem... treated for the hernia, and it went back in... kept up with the water changes, added epsom salt, and the white poop keeps comin out... fish does not have an appetite, and hasnt eaten in a week... im thinkin bout bombin the tank with clout... do yall think that will be effective?? im not sure what this fish has, maybe hex? other route would be to net the fish, and force feed him medication... ive heard of using gel tek antibiotics for that... thanks in advice..

Try metro instead alongside the epsom.

As for appetite I would look into making a small portion of shrimp mix and add a clove of garlic or drops of garlic extract.

Some will disagree but my opinion of clout is that it's a hail mary drug and too aggressive in most cases.

I would not overdose any med unless needed.... regardless of how strong one would deem a fish being sick and stressed is not measurable and could easily lead to death if the meds weakened them any more.

+1 for EK -- I would not overdose -- it can be bad for your fish.
Since he is not eating this means usually his intestines are blocked. Adding food to him is not going to do you any good as he will just eject the food, and then you are in the same spot as you where. You will need for the medication to take effect other wise.

Making the shrimp mix (which I find not many resist) also allows you to administer meds orally.

Can you post a picture of the fish with the Hernia?

Not eating in a week is a pretty good problem. I would go with Metro as well.

Other possibles are Parasite Clear from Jungle which is a mix of Prazi and Metro. Clout is a mix of Metro and Malachite Green. Either med I think would work.

It's hard to recommend a treatment without knowing what the FH is suffering from. The prolapsed rectum is usually from constipation (which could be from just being blocked up, IPs, or a bacterial infection). Do you ever feed him any greens? Peas, or spiralina, or algae discs? Hikari Cichlid Excel contains wheat germ and spiralina IF you can get him to take food. Something I do is pre-soak the Cichlid Excel so they are puffy and soft. If you can get him to take food, this would be a good thing to try. ALL of our fish love the soaked Cichlid Excel...even the Koi prefer it over their everyday food. And make sure not to go over the recommended dosage of any meds...doing that can cause kidney failure. How is his water? Ammonia and Nitrite should be 0, and Nitrates < 20, especially right now while he's fighting an illness. Keep up the epson salt...that's always my first 'go to' additive when our fish aren't feeling so hot.

Does he show any external problems? Bloating? Color changes? Is he still swimming normally?
