A little over a year ago I picked up two small, very distinctive cichlids. I 'think' they are South/Central American, but have not been able to identify them. I am wondering if someone out there can identify them for me. When I bought them, they were almost a deep black, with brilliant white spots all over them. As they matured, they eventually lost all of their spots and are now almost black with a broad vertical white stripe just behind the pectoral fins, from top to bottom. They are in a community 46 gallon tank with bala sharks, Australian rainbows, Chinese algae eaters, corys, striped rafaels, and a plecostomus that is nearly a foot long. Though I haven't provided anything special for them the original pair (no discernible difference other than size) has now had two broods, one of 5 and one of 3. The adults are approximately 5 inches long. The male is extremely territorial and very attentive to the female, chasing after her almost constantly.
Can anyone tell me what these fish are?
