  • Hi FishBoxers! Newbie Here!

    Hello guys! :)

I joined this forum a few weeks ago but am just getting around to introducing myself. I've been quite busy. Anyways, so I'm Laura and I am from the Richmond area. I am a busy college student and I work part time. I also still live with my parents for the time being. So how did I get into fish? Well, I never considered having fish until I took an Aquatic Science class my senior year of high school (Really interesting blow-off class). We had 2-3 people to a fish tank and we had to take care of the fish the entire year (we also learned other aquatic science stuff or it wouldn't be a real class   ). It was a real learning experience. I didn't know there was so much involved. Me and my two partners had a 30 gallon FO Saltwater tank with one Blue Damsel in the beginning. Taking care of him and his new tank mates was not easy. I think we went through 10 fish (one of which died two days later) and even the first damsel died in the end. Even with the terrible bad luck (we thought our tank was cursed b/c no other group had so many deaths) I asked my dad for a fish tank the next Christmas. He got me a 12 gallon Nano Cube Deluxe. It was a really nice tank. I had a 2" Polypterus senegalus in it and he was really healthy and happy... and then the tank cracked in half randomly so I got a 10 gallon. He lived for about a year and a half and then died (I don't know why because I wasn't home). So I have had fish on and off for about 2 1/2 years, I've made mistakes, and I've killed fish (not on purpose), but I'm learning. I still consider myself a newbie and would love to eventually become fish gods like yourselves.     LOL! :)

So here are my tanks. I will upload pictures soon:

2.5 Gallon Mini-Bow- I have a male blue Veiltail Betta that my sister bought about 1 year ago. So that would make him 1 1/2 years old if you assume he was 6 months old when we bought him. I also just added two Olive Nerite snails to help control my algae growth. Not too long ago I planted it and it has some java moss attached to a rock and a small (don't know if it is petite) Anubias Nana. The filter is a mini (in tank?) Whisper and the heater is a Marineland Stealth 25. The light bulb in the hood is a 10 watt GE Compact Fluorescent Daylight 6500K.

5 Gallon Mini-Bow- I have a red Crowntail Betta I bought a week after Ike hit. I also just added four Olive Nerite snails but two of them mysteriously died. I also have one hitchhiker snail and I am dubious as to where he came from.  8O He kinda looks like a Malaysian Trumpet Snail but his shell is transparent with the tip black. Maybe he is just getting his color? I dunno. This tank is also lightly planted. I have java moss attached to a rock, a small Anubias Nana, and some Elodea (Anacharis). I'm not sure I am liking the Elodea because it is so weedy looking and the leaves turn brown very easily. The filter is an Aqua Clear 20 and the heater is a Marineland Stealth 50. The light bulb in the hood is a 10 watt GE Compact Fluorescent Daylight 6500K.

10 Gallon- The current inhabitant is d'Artagnan my 2" Red Tailed Shark. I know the tank is too small for his adult size but I just persuaded my parents to help me buy a bigger tank.   I bought him also in late September with three Tiger Barbs from PetSmart. I noticed a small white thing hanging from one of the Tiger Barbs mouth but thought nothing of it. Turns out the white thing was columnaris (got help from other fish people online). When I finally figured out I had a disease in the tank one of the Tiger Barbs had died and one other one was showing symptoms. As I scrambled to find the proper medication the other two died. Worried about the health of my Red Tailed Shark d'Artagnan I bought some API Triple Sulfa and treated the tank until I used up the whole box. The fish owners I was talking to online suggested that since d'Artagnan never showed any symptoms of the disease that I should be very careful when I add new fish to the tank. I was told to wait 2 months until I get new fish and then add them in one at a time and watch carefully for anything amiss. So far he has been by himself but he is doing great and eating well. I have also seen no signs of disease or any other nasty. The filter on the tank is an Aqua Clear 30 and the heater is a Marineland Stealth 50. The lights I have on it are two 10 watt GE Compact Fluorescent Daylight 6500K bulbs in place of the incandescent that came with the hood.

I am getting a bigger tank for Christmas and I hope that you guys can help me with the details in another thread. :) This sounds like a great website and I hope to learn alot and make many friends!

Yeah. I am already getting bug-eyed! I think I will just have to occasionally slap myself if I start wanting too many large tanks too fast that I don't have any money left. And I actually like those raman noodle cups, just not all the time. Try some cheap frozen dinners for variety.

Thanks for the greetings!   I'm trying to get some pics up of my tanks. Nothing awesome but if any of you were curious... And I just got some pics of the transparent hitchhiker snail. I'm wondering if you guys could tell me what species he is (once I get the pictures up).
