  • "sleeping" Albino Bristlenose Pleco?

I have an ABN that randomly "sleeps"

by sleep I mean he'll stop sucking on whatever it is he is sucking on and lay on the bottom upside down not sucking on anything, or moving, then later I'll see him and he'll be back to normal.

This has been a new thing that he didn't used to do. is this normal?

he's in a 30 gallon with a handful of sailfin mollies, 3 rosy barbs, and a couple of tetras.

All the parameters have been fine.
    Ammonia and nitrite 0
    nitrate 5- 20
    PH steady at 8.4

    Note:
I did have 2 sailfins die in the recent past, one just before Ike, and another a couple weeks ago.  all the parameters were fine and within the range stated above when they died.

I used to have a friend that would do something similar to that; he would "freeze" for a little while and then he'd be back to normal in a few seconds. We called them meltdowns. They didn't seem to have any real affect on him, so maybe your fish is just having a "meltdown".
So many things can be a mystery, when all we're seeking is freedom...

I think the pleco might have went through some shock and is fighting to stay with us.

Though the other comments sound a bit more interesting...

                Uh yeah, what Kris said.

Sounds like he may have cataplexy - often found hand in hand with narcolepsy.  at moments of high emotion wheter its' stress, laughter, fear, etc, one suffers a loss of muscle tone.  Thank goodness I don't have that part.

I would add some nice dark caves for him, and dim the light a little.  He may be fine once he realizes there's always someplace closeby that is both safe and dark.
The ultimate oxymoron - Narcolepsy and ADHD.
Who says you can`t have it all??!!

I'll figure out some caves for him to hide in.  hopefully that will help him out.
