  • 4 months later~ 180 Gallon 'community' CA/SA Cichlids 10/4/0

Originally set this up around the beginning of June-there have been a few casualties and some trade-ins.  The GT went to a fish store as it started to get dominated by the JD~ who is still the king of the tank.  I would've assumed that the male festae wouldve taken over as it is now the largest, bulkiest fish in the tank (same one that used to attack the glass cleaner).  Fish not pictured:  male managuensis (festae punching bag), Carpinte 'escondido', A. trimaculatus (grammodes punching bag).

Here is the link to what they looked like 4 months ago-
HoustonFishBox is an online community dedicated to bringing together people and their fish in Houston, Southeast Texas, and beyond.

The tetracanthus was killed, the firemouths and the HRP were trade ins as they didnt belong and started to get attacked....  Im sure that the Paratheraps/Vieja spp will be next to go and what Ill be left with are the festae, red devil, JD, carpinte, trimac and grammodes.

    Full tank shot:

    N. grammodes (4")

    Petsmart 'Red Devil' (4")

    P. synspilus (3.5")

    JD (6")-nicest I've ever had.

    V. argentea (3.5")

    V. maculicauda (3.5")

    exC. festae pair (6"M, 3.5"F)

    M. sp 'Araguaia'-dither of choice...

Wow....really nice SA tank! Love the fish election.

My fav. would have to be the festae pair.  Female looks like she is on fire.
I ate my fish that died.

Those are some nice looking fish, however that Vieja Maculicauda doesn't look like a maculicauda. It has different markings from the ones Im familiar with. I guess it has to get bigger before the red comes out, but I studied these in Belize and even the ones I've raised have had red being kinda small. Still cool. What size is that tank?

I wonder when that Red Devil is going to start taking things over?

Is he or she growing faster than the rest?

Its definitely a black belt.  He has some red in the tail and in the throat right now, but is nowhere near the dominant fish so it hides most of the time.

I dont think there is much of a chance for the RD to dominate with a pair of festae in there.  Even when not in breeding behavior, a male festae should be able to take a similar sized RD.  Considering how large male festae ge~ 15" or, I dont think that the RD will ever get larger than the male.  I plan on taking the RD out down the line and giving him a 75/90 to himself.  I really like the white and orange variation of these fish.

You should name the maculicauda "Tuba". Thats what they call em in Belize. And they taste GOOD.
