  • Ulcer on Oranda

I have been treating the goldfish in my pond for ulcers for about a month now. Most seem to be slowly geting better. Tomorrow I am going to pull out one oranda that still looks to be in very poor condition.  I have been using melafix and pimafix because I'm not sure of the root cause of the ulcer (bacterial or parasitic). I can say with some degree of certainty that this resulted from poor water quality and an overstocked pond when I moved in.

Any suggestions on how I should treat it? I was thinking hydrogen peroxide...

    I'll take pictures tomorrow.

Either I over medicated the first one, or it was too far along.
This one has a bump... what do y'all think?

Ask The Fish Doctor... ms Traci Davis... she will prolly be able to you a complete run down on exactly what do it.

Take a look at http://www.fishyfarmacy.com and see if that gives you an idea.

Tim.. couple of things I have read up on quick about Koi fish.

A number of illnesses that Koi get is because they are in "cold" water.   Heat the water (ie in your hospital tank) up to about 86 degrees and most of the common viruses Koi get, die off in the heat.

I would look to get some heavy duty parasite killer.. I dont know what the best would be but I am thinking from looking at the wound that its most likely a parasite that is causing this issue.. ie worm or something like that.  Get the best known stuff to kill that off and I am thinking you will be on the best track there.
If you need a heater that will bring that Koi up to 87 I have one..  you just install in the tank and it will heat it to 87 and hold it.  It has no adjustment :(

I would caution against hydrogen peroxide. I'm still waiting for the first picture to load, though...  (5 minutes later...)

Okay, well, hmm. Are you doing big water changes as well as treating them with pimafix and melafix? That's always my advice for any kind of ailment.

As big as I can on the pond... about 600-700 gallons every weekend the past month. I can't get all the debris out of the bottom though. I'm going to need to get one of fshfrk's "poop vacuums".

If I were you, I'd just keep doing what you're doing. It sounds perfect.

As for the one in the tank, is the bump you're talking about the white bump, or is it the spot next to its pectoral fin?

Sure! And let us know if GHAC needs to donate anything to help pay the water bill...

I have a stack of heaters in the closet. Thanks though. I'll heat the water to make the whole process go faster.

By any chance did the Petro you were keeping for me come in any contact any shape or form net wise, food wise, or anything with these fish?

In the last two weeks I am having a outbreak of Ulcers on my Trophs in the tank I put that Petro in.  The petro is 100% fine and eating, but the Trophs are coming down with what looks like white flakey scale with a red center.

I am only trying to look into all possibilities.

Umm... nope. My pond nets stay outside and my pond food stays outside as well.  This past week was the first time that I brought one of them inside to medicate. The only thing that they had in common is that I treated their water with the same thing - Prime.
