  • When to strip fry

My Labidochromis caeruleus started holding on 8/13 and Sciaenochromis fryeri started holding today 8/15.  If I want to strip their frys, not eggs, how long do I wait?

    Three weeks.

Dorothy : How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

The Egg yolk is absorbed into the body after about 16 days of incubation, with the remaining of the egg yolk consumed thereafter.  Best results like Tim said is to wait for the third week.  They will be free swimming and able to survive in a grow out tank with noone else in the tank after that.

The closer to spit they are the easier it is to take care of the fry.

Yep, wait as long as you can....unless you have an egg tumbler, then it's really up to you.

              Re: When to strip fry

I striped the Sciaenochromis fryeri on Sep 7th and got about 50 frys.  I have them in the 10 gallon tank with Odyssea 250 sponge filter running.  My bumble bee mom is due next Sunday.  I estimate she might have about 80 to 100frys.  Would the 10 gallon tank house both batch total about 150 frys?  I am running out of space for additional tank in the house.

By the way, how are everybody's fish tanks and fish after the hurrican?  I was worried about losing power but the hurricane didn't hit us.  Luck Port Lavaca.

I think you will be fine initially. You'll need to find somewhere for them as they grow though. Good luck.

If you don't have room for them, why not let the Bumblebee spit in the tank?

                  Re: When to strip fry

I used to let them spit in the tank but watch babies grow into bigger fish is a lot of fun.

I have a 48 bowfront tank housing about 20 juv brichardi and 4 juv Otopharynx lithobate.  I will move Otopharynx to the big tank in about a week.  I want to get ride of all brichardi and use that tank to grow babies to juv.  I think my students will prefer Sciaenochromis fryeri, Labidochromis caeruleus, or bumble bees to brichardi.

My wife was thinking about to build a club house in our backyard with fish tanks against the walls and a pool table in the middle.  I laught about it but, hmmm... what am I going to do with all the fish I breed here in Port Lavaca?  I wish we have a fish club here like you have in Houston.

                      Re: When to strip fry

I would love to observe the auctions.  Is it fun just to observe it and see how things work out in the auctions.  One trip for me to Houston is about 1 hour and 40 minutes.  How much frys should I sell to buy the gasoline to the auctions? Can I observe the auctions if I am not a member?

Of course!  Everyone is invited and you are not required to buy OR sell anything.  Although, I can say from personal experience, you will probably leave with something.

GHAC was supposed to have one the same weekend Ike came and tore everything up.  We are working on putting together the new date and I think it's going to be sooner rather than later.  :)

HAS has their fall auction I believe the second Sunday of November when I talked to Charles (Pres of HAS), but this was several weeks ago when I spoke to him about it... and my memory is not the best in the world anymore
