ok, the wife wants to get the kids a beta...if we got a male and female theyd be ok together right?

any nice little packages tha twould work well for them, all the beta stuff ive seen seems rather tiny?

also is there anywhere good in houston to buy them? are they ok to keep at room temp, or should
    they really have a heater?
    thanks

    Re: beta

You can not keep a male and a female fighting fish in the same tank. They will fight!
If you get a rectangular tank, you can add a piece of glass or plexiglass diagonally in the tank and keep one on each side.
Look for something in the 2.5 to 5 gallon range.  If you do not have a filter system, plan on changing the water every 7 to 10 days.
They like 82 degrees but will do fine at 77+/-.  Most lfs have pet store quality bettas, but if you want a show quality betta, you need to contact one of the
betta breeders many of whom belong to the BettaHabari.

He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

        Slyfox..

PP is the man when it comes to Betta's.. but one thing I will say which is that Betta's will learn to live in quite cooler water than 77.. mine right now lives in 71-72 degree water and blows the biggest bubble nests I have ever seen.
Since he is in a 1g bowl, I do replace 100% of the water every two weeks..   Mine is quite happy with this arrangement, but I am sure that he would be happier in a little warmer waters.. which might happen sooner or later as I am thinking about moving him to a 10g tank soon and adding a separator so he can have a girlfriend.

we got a male in the end, hes in one gallon, hes a crown beta and not amazing by show standards, but the kids picked him
and i was pleased they chose the best looking fish there :)

                Re: beta

thanks, i read quite a bit on the internet before getting it, what was interesting was that there was quite a bit of conflict
of opinion from one writer to another..

nice thing for me is that the wife is going to do the weekly water changes although i was looking forward to changing 1g
nicer than the 30gs salt i do a week lol
