    It happens....lighting, flow, nutrient excess.

Do you have any algae eaters in there? How much light is on the tank? For how long each day?

yea i have a sedontis catfish and two bristle noes plecos.  i leave the light on for about 8 hours a day.  there is plenty of flow in the tank.  i run a fluval 404, wet/dry 700gph, and a powerhead.  I dont have aquarium rated bulbs in my 48" light fixture.  would this be the cause?  thanks.

Lighting may have something to do with it...I left my lights on too long once and my whole tank had a green tint for the next 2 weeks.

8hrs is too long if you do not have something in there that will consume excess nutrients or a way of exporting it. Also most tap water will have the nutrients that fuel algae in it already.

My personal suggestion, set the lights to six hours.. stick in some plants.

Hmm, I personally don't think 8 hours is too much. But in your 48" light fixture, how many watts are you running? What size is the aquarium?

where can i find this stuff locally.  i dont want to have to order it off of the internet.  Ramius i appreciate the offer of getting my some plants but im pretty sure that my cichlids would eat those things pretty quick.

i have checked the petco in atascosita and they do not have it.  petsmart has it online but says online only.
