Re: flowerhorn facts
We have 2 female flowerhorns.
They are supposed to be Grade AA.
We have them in a 240g and their tankmates are:
- 4 Frontosa
- 1 bichir
- 1 Giraffe Catfish
- 1 Venestus
- 3 Peacocks
- 3 Clown Loaches
- 2 Green Terrors
- 3 Datnoids
- 1 Flying Fox
- 1 unidentified algae eater (looks like a pink miniature manitee/pig hybrid)
They are both about 18 months old now and are about 8".
They eat anything. We feed them rosey red feeders, Cichlid Excel pellets, frozen bloodworms, frozen brine shrimp...
They lay eggs all the time and are great at protecting them until they go bad because they don't have a male to fertilize them.
What else can I tell you?Our Fishhouse

Re: flowerhorn facts
I don't think ours will get any bigger since they are female. They get a little pissy when they are getting ready to lay eggs, but otherwise they are content with their tankmates. No worse than any other cichlid. I would never keep them with anything much smaller than them though. Our Fishhouse

Re: flowerhorn facts
Most flowerhorn males I have seen are in the 12in category. When they are ready to spawn they get highly territorial. That is about all I know about them

Re: flowerhorn facts
I have three flowerhorns, the biggest one is male w/ a nice size kok on his head, nice black markings on the side and is about 4 - 5 inches. The other two are baby flowerhorns I have picked up along the way because they were cheap! The male was going for $150.00, and I received him as a present. The male is in a tank by himself (I'm hoping to put him in a bigger tank soon) and he is very aggressive. I can't even put a pleco in there with him. The two baby flowerhorns, once they got to be about 2 -3 inches they started to be aggressive towards each other. I finally had to take the bigger one out and give it to my cousin. He/she is now in a 75 gallon tank w/ other cichlids his/her size so they don't mess with each other but the flowerhorns grow a lot quicker than the other cichlids. My littlest one is still traumatize and each time someone goes up to the tank, he swims away and hides. I think he will be very pretty once he gets bigger.
My uncle and cousin both have flowerhorns (males over 12 inches) and they know a lot more than I do. Everyone I've talked to hasn't had much success putting them in with other fish. I plan on keeping my separate because he is really beautiful and I don't want him getting hurt. Also, I know the males grow to be pretty big and I don't know many other cichlids that get that size that you can put them in a tank with.Experiencing an aquatic renaissance!
