  • Hello!

Hi! I just moved back to Houston from college in Durham, NC. I am not too experienced - I currently only have one little blue male betta named Fred (a rescue - he was being used as a table centerpiece in a tiny bowl!), but I do love him dearly (I once spent $200 on a veterinarian visit, and I even took him with me on my recent trip to Disneyworld because he was getting sick!). He's in a 2 gallon hex tank with under gravel filter. In the past I've owned another betta, and several fancy goldfish (red cap oranda, calico fantail, and calico telescope-eye). I'd love to move up to bigger and better (more) things, but since I'm starting medical school in August, I think I might keep things simple for a while. I'm really glad to have found a site like this, especially with the apparent lack of fish veterinarians in the Houston area.

Speaking of which - I had read another post in which someone asked about vets in the area... are there really no vets in the Houston area that treat fish? I mean, that know how to treat fish? It's so disappointing... Houston IS the fourth largest city in the US after all...

    Welcome to the box!

As for fish vets......with all the knowledge on this forum which is usually free I don't see much of a demand.

Welcome to the next best thing to crack.....and it's legal.  As for fish vets, I think there are a lot of folks on here that should be certified by now.  There are plenty of us that are certifiable anyways...LOL!!!

              Re: Hello!

Welcome!  You found the right place.

              1.  We are all 'certifiable', like Hanson said.
              2.  You have to make an appointment to see a vet, but there is always someone here to help 24/7.
              3.  We are so scattered all over the Houston metro area, and many of us will make housecalls. -- Spare equipment and meds in tow.
              4.  Last but not least, we know that what YOU think is an emergency, probably is.

              Glad you have you here!

Welcome to the BOX !!!  and congrats on coming to Houston and being accepted to Medical School here :)

I dont know about Vets etc... Nick (you will see him online for sure one of these days... his signature is hard to miss) works for a Vet... the rest of us...  we are like girlgeek said.. certifiable.
We try to be helpful and give tips when needed.. just ask.. someone is almost always online... (at least I am glued to the screen for 12 hours a day)

I am sorry to tell you, you missed the Betta Harkari event late last month at Megan's which is close to Clear Lake.   Tons of Betta there.

Stepping up to larger tanks -- plenty of people have done it in the past...  we can tell you how :)

Welcome to the box. That was my post asking for a vet and from what I have found the nearest one would be in Austin.  :(  Found a really super vet there and have talked to him over the internet and on the phone. Just sent him an email this morning and waiting for a response. You will find 99% of the help you need right here on this forum.    Unfortunately my problem is with a saltwater puffer.  :(  I have been in touch with some puffer pro's on other forums but they can't even help me at this point. Anyway back to the topic: Welcome, Welcome, Welcome, hope you love it in Houston!

Welcome to the box, teaparty! Is there any meaning to your screenname - i.e. do you like tea or just Alice in Wonderland?
                              Scarecrow : I haven't got a brain... only straw.
Dorothy : How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.
