An emperor 400 should do a good job for most types of fish. What type of fish are you planning on keeping in your 55?

I assume you are talking about air pumps in your second question, right?

Dorothy : How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

Yeppers.  Emp 400 should be sufficient.

Depending on what you keep in there like armthehomeless stated but for the most part the emp400 should suffice.

Emp400 should be ok for moderately stocked 55.  I ran a 400 an Eheim 2215 on my 60 gallon which was just a few inches taller and full of cichlids and it kept it spotless.

Oh yeah!  We have a 400 that we move around to various tanks as needed.  Once it's seasoned, it's a workhorse.

As far as an air pump, I never really used them.  But you might want to get like Maxi-Jet 600 or 900 just to get a little more movement in your water.  The have an air line that comes off the top of the output that you can adjust to get more air into the tank.  I found that with the tank being that long you get a lot of dead space on either end that the filter is not on, that's why I went with a filter on both sides.

IMO a 55g is way too small for an arowana more less two of them.

You don't even need an air pump unless you like the look of bubble in your water.  Like ek said, 55g is too small for aros, but if thats all you got.....keep them in their and enjoy.

You guys with 400's and 350's on 10 gallon tanks must have all your fish mashed up against the front pane of the tank or they are all hiding under up under the filters....LOL!!!!

You need a serious tank for the Aros, they get really large and need plenty of swimming space.  The 55 will work for a small pair but you will need to think about upgrading your tank if you are considering keeping them for the long haul.  They really need atleast a 5 footer if not a 6.
