  • Anyone have a male flowerhorn for stud services?

We have 2 female flowerhorns who keep laying eggs, but no male to fertilize them.  Anyone have a male they want to breed?     We could breed 'em and split the fry!

      Hello girlgeek,

First of all I definitely want to breed flowerhorn.  At this moment I have 7 flowerhorn unknown sex, they are about 5 months old ranging from 3-4 inch in size.  Anyways.

I have 1 male for sure and the hump is growing pretty good, its in my newly set up 125g show tank that I started early April so about 2 months ago.  He's about 5 inches and he's the chosing one to be in the show tank with my others that I've chosen to be in the display.

To keep the story short... if I discover another ganrantee male from the bunch of 7 that I have, I will personally dilevery it to you at no cost and go with your plan. Or if you want, you can take all 7 and speed up the growing process in your 100g plus tanks. Just an offer I want to put in hands.  All of them are very healthy. LMK.

Wow!  That sounds great!  I have no problem waiting for your guys to mature.  Ours are a little over a year old now and have been laying eggs for about 2 months.  I'm sure we've got plenty of time.  It just seemed like such a waste for the eggs to die since they are really nice looking Flowerhorns (IMO).  We got these in trade for doing some computer work last year.  They are supposed to be Grade AA.  I looked up what that means and got different info based on the website I was reading.  So, I decided to take some pictures and let you see for yourself....

These are our girls.  Sorry the pics are dark, I need to do something about the lighting on that tank.  :)

They are really pretty!!! I try taking some pics but its not that good and clear like yours.  BTW, how did you attach the pics to this post? I try to do it but the files too big even after I put in zip files. I think max is 250k to post an attach here. Sorry I'm not really good with computers.

Anyways I be sure to keep in touch when they are ready.  Curious, but how long does it takes a flowerhorn to get mature?

I use www.photobucket.com to post pics.  It's free.  you can just create an account, then upload your pics.  Then copy the link into your post and it converts the link into a picture.  That way you don't have to worry about what size your picture is.

I'm not sure how long it takes for the male to mature, but our females started laying eggs at about 1 year old.

Re: Anyone have a male flowerhorn for stud services?

Being that a Flowerhorn is primarily made up of South American Fish, they mature young around 6-8 months.. The geeks females have become restless and are laying eggs, because they can and want to.  Flowerhorns are very aggressive fish therefore introduction has to be done, ie you have to look at the fish for a couple of hours, to make sure that they will pair up.  If fights continue one its time to remove the female or male to a different setup and attempt another fish.  Patience is the key but I also know that once a pair mate up, you are going to be looking at broods of around 500-1000 per round of egg laying.  They will breed pretty much as far as I know when they are not defending young every about 4 weeks.

              Just my 2c worth.

Re: Anyone have a male flowerhorn for stud services?

I read that the best way to introduce a male and female is to put them in the same tank separated by a divider.  This way, they can see each other, but not get at each other.  Then when they appear to be getting comfortable, you can remove the divider.  But you still have to watch.  If one is aggressive and the other is submissive, you separate them again.  But if they go head to head, they are courting...at least this is what I read.

                We'll see!  :)

                  imagirlgeek,

Everything you read about breeding flowerhorns is right.  I love me a fat headed FH! I just now read this tread and seen the pictures of your two females. WOW! They look absolutely amazing for female FHs. The top one has so much pearls and the bottom one has a nice deep red.  I haven't seen good looking females like yours in a while.

Thank you, to both of you.

We call them 'our girls'.  :)  They have really great personalities...and, oh my gosh, are they spoiled and lazy!!    We give that tank feeders...and when we drop the feeders in, if neither of the girls catches one, they just turn and look at us waiting for more to be dropped in.  It's like they are saying "Um...no.  We are NOT going to chase those things all over the tank...you just drop more in...and this time, try and aim closer to our mouths."  LOL
