  • Least favorite deceased LFS

Ok, what are your least favorite LFS from the past?  LFS that are no more? LFS that have ceased to be?
Note, please be constructive. This not about disliking an individual who worked there because of something they did in their off time. This is to be based on presentation, price/quality, customer service etc.
    Mine are :
    1. Petland in Sharpstown mall: Mislabeled fish (common bichirs were sold as ropefish) and poor customer service. They did not honor their own 3 day guarantees!
I had bought an eel (I remember looking like a green rice eel) in 1989, it died the next day. I returned the eel's refrigerated corpse on the third day and they refused to refund/replace because I did not bring it the day it died! At that time, I was at UH and after class, I worked at a video store. I could not go that day nor should that have been an issue. Prices were high as well.
    2. Discount Tropical Fish on Bellfort near 59 S: VERY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. I asked for the price of a red-tailed shark in an unmarked tank. The price they guy gave me was too high for my taste, despite the store's name (8.99!). Then he asked me if I wanted it and I declined. Then I noticed dead fish in every third tank. When I brought to his attention, he said it was because people like me weren't buying fish from there. I walked out, never to return.
    3. Pet store on Elgin/Smith near Montrose (I cannot remember the name of that place): bad smell in store, outdated products on shelf, high number of dead fish, water in tanks were cloudy. I made the mistake of buying an amphiuma (an eel-like salamander) which was sold to me as a siren (a different type of eel-like salamander) and a canister of fish food. They clearly made it known that everything in the store was sold on an ''as-is" basis. The amphiuma died in a month, the fish food was fossilized!
    4. Another LFS whose name I cannot remember, located at S. Main and S. Post Oak, near Fiesta and there used to be a K-Mart in the area. Circa 1988. I went in and there was cloudy water and multiple dead fish in tanks.
    5. Planet Fish (first version on Stella Link/610 near Foodarama and All Cats clinic): I list this one because of price and mislabeled fish only. ANY freshwater goby was labeled as a "Dragon Goby", including Benny Gobys and Jade Gobys, as well as an "Asian Pleco" a true pleco with irregular spots. When I mentioned that there are no plecos from Asia to the workers there, they pretended that I was not there. I bought it anyway, and I still have this handsome fish who is close to a foot long now. Their  prices on supplies made Fish Gallery seem like City Pets! To be fair, their presentation was very nice and fish prices were generally competitive.
    PLECOS SUCK!

Don't know the name, but it was on the northside of Westheimer near Hwy. 6.  NASTY!!   Everything there should have been euthanized and put out of their misery (including the owner!)

This place isn't deceased.  It's moved a block down 59 to Wilcrest.  I'm pretty sure it's under the same ownership too because the customer service is still non-existent.  I attempted to go by there about a year ago and there was a sign on the door saying they were closed for lunch, with a time they would return.  So I decided to run other errands and come back.  When I returned it was well past the time the sign said they'd be back, yet it was STILL CLOSED.  And last Friday, we couldn't find feeders to save our lives.  All of our regular haunts were out of them.  So, I decided to call Discount to see if MAYBE he had some.  Here's how the conversation went....

      <ring>
      DFS - Discount Fish
Me - Hi.  Do you have any feeders?
      DFS - What?
Me - Do you have any feeder fish?
      DFS - What kind?
      Me - Rosey Reds
      DFS - No.
Me - Okay.  Do you have any guppies?
      DFS - NO.  <click?

      He hung up on me.

So, yeah, this place is still open, but it may as well be deceased.  I know it's dead to me.  :)

        ROFLMAO

Nick your number 2 thru 5 have me laughing

        2. Discount Tropical Fish on Bellfort near 59 S: This place was next to Dairy Queen. I brought my first Front from him years ago. I paid 60 dollars for a 11 inch male front. Plus I brought my first large tank from him 125 All Glass. His store did go to hell after awhile. My best friend brought a car from him.

        3. Pet store on Elgin/Smith near Montrose : You talking about the place where they used to sell exotic animals....hated that place.

        4. Another LFS whose name I cannot remember, located at S. Main and S. Post Oak, near Fiesta and there used to be a K-Mart in the area. Circa 1988. They had another store close to Hobby Airport that was better. This one was run by a family member.

        5. Planet Fish (first version on Stella Link/610 near Foodarama and All Cats clinic): The owner was a ***** but sold me a used 240 setup including mh lights for 800. I used to go in and catch and bag (attemped to) my own fish and sometime write the price on them  They never said anything.

Some of these places I think are fronts for something else. Hardly any customers or sales. Non-existent sales help. No way they made enough to stay afloat.

Cameo -- yeah I know what you mean at times with that...
When I moved to the US in 1985 I was still a kid (16) and by 1989 I had started hanging out with some good friends of mine all over Houston and we used to hang out nightly at the Denny's at (S Main/610)...  There we meet all these interesting people and being from a very protected family I just could not comprehend that you would not give a care about your business, later I found out that the two people who used to sit at the front door and talk to everyone was owners of a body / paint shop that really made some good money on setup of cars -- but rolled in the money from their drug business...

There was a store on 1960 for a while....going toward 45. Went in there one time and actually had the guy yell at me for coming in. Wish I could remember the name.
