  • Raising Fry in Seperate Tank

I was wondering how many of the other tropheus keepers, will strip their holding females and raise the fry in seperate tanks, if any?

I had to rescue (again) several fry from my overflow box, and now have 6 very small chimba's in a little nursery tank sticking inside the main tank. Is there any reason why I should not place these fry in a small tank of their own with a sponge filter?

Any other tips or suggestions when it comes to raising these tiny guys? They are eating Thera A NLS....  :)

    Thanks

    Steve

it depends. do you want to resale them? if so, i'd give them their own tank. if not, let survival of the fittest take effect, that way you thin out the slow/dumb ones out of your arising colony. i've got a group of cyprichromis in a 10 gallon right now (all about .5-1")

Although I have no real objection to the Survival of The Fittest ideology, I do not like the idea of babies that do not get the "lay of the land" fast enough, turned into snack items for the already well fed general population. I suppose what I am really looking for overall opinions on "baby troph tanks" ???

If you want to keep them in the same tank, you can put a bunch of holey rock in there with lots of holes for them to hide into. With my old chimba colony, when I first got them, I had 10 that were 2-3" and 6 that were .5-1". I had holey rock in there for a good time and I never once lost a baby.

I know how you feel Steve.  I've raised fry in a seperate tank with no issues.  Raise them up to a decent size within the limits of the tank they are in and then introduce them back into the colony or their own larger tank.

            Steve,

I strip my kachese and raise them in a separate tank. I have now moved all the kachese fry to a 125 gallon aquarium that houses 48 of them. I have two females holding now and will add those fry to the tank when I strip them.

I'm just looking for justification to set up another tank I guess.... :)

Re: Raising Fry in Seperate Tank

I have 6 45 breeders set up strictly as fry tanks. I keep plenty of rock with small holes and crevasses in the main tank in case I miss a female and need to gather fry after they are released. I try to pull the females from the colony when she is at 2-3 weeks, place her in one of the breeders until she releases on her own, then place her back into the colony tank. So far this method has produced the fewest losses for me.

Re: Raising Fry in Seperate Tank

I let mine spit in the tank and so far it has shown great success. Initially there was a few adults that thought they were snacks but after getting sick from eating them all they learned their lesson.

I do have a large floating nursery for those occasions where I am forced to pull fry from the tank before I want to and am tossing the idea of setting up another tank to raise a super massive colony of my Ilangi's.

With the overflow problem cross-stitching grids will easily fix that problem.

Yeah, I had at one time a sponge cut to fit inside of the inside overflow box, but it slowed the water flow down too much, maybe I could look into a different type of sponge with corse material to it.??

I have not found bits or pieces of fry, and I know they are being produced, it's just they don't turn up as often as they used too.

Thanks for all the input folks...keep it coming if you have more...

Re: Raising Fry in Seperate Tank

I think ek was talking about something similar to this plastic mesh that comes in the CPR overflow boxes. They're put there to prevent exactly what you mentioned.

I asked about this overflow a while back and EK stated he was not impressed with it, said it was junk if my memory serves me correctly....but I understand your intent it to point out the mesh, and I appreciate your input Jonathan. I'd like to see one of these in person, I can't seem to grasp the mechanics to it clearly....

From all what I have read maybe 1 out of 10 like it and like it a lot. If you question how far my reading goes.....I am an active member of probably over 30 forums and love google.

I have some of the cross-stitching stuff and will bring some to the next meeting if I can make it. It's good stuff and a bit finer then what comes with the CPR overflow but more coarse then any sponge. I have used it over pump intakes and what not to keep fish out and never noticed any decrease in flow.
