  • OCEANIC/AGA

Oceanic is much the same as All Glass.
Consider the fact that Central Pet owns All Glass and a few years ago Central Pet purchased Oceanic, shut down their entire tank manufacturing and moved everything to Dallas. So All Glass and Oceanic are pretty much the same people now, and those people are not the original Oceanic people, they broke away and have started a new tank company, the name slips my mind at the moment. In fact, I remember one of Oceanic's tank guys in Eugene, Oregon asking the shop I was working at if he could build tanks for us instore. We advised he go to a bigger city, like L.A.
Anyways...I digress, All Glass and Oceanic are all under Central Pet. Maybe they make the glass thicker and claim to build to a high standard like before etc, but I question Oceanic's quality these days. Add this to the fact that Central Pet's stock dropped quite a bit near the close of 2007,

"One of the day’s biggest losers on the Nasdaq Stock Market was Central Garden & Pet http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.ht...jn&symbol=CENT , which reported a 4.8% decline in sales for its most recent quarter, due in large part to rising grain prices and flagging interest in aquatics, which hurt the bird, fish and “small animal” divisions. Shares of the stock are down 60% in what has clearly been a tough year for the pet business, although PetSmart http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.ht...jn&symbol=PETM , a leading pet retailer, was down just 10% on the year headed into today’s trading." and you must come to the conclusion that they are trying to make up for their losses.

Central Pet basically bought the name, fired the staff and put their staff to work slapping the reputation they bought to sell tanks at a higher price while still able to manufacture at the cost that All Glass is manufactured at.

Interesting, but nothing most of us didn't already know to some degree.  A product may not have the same quality as before, but the name is still the name.  Fact of life, people trust a name for what it is.

True, and until people are educated they will never know the difference.
I am not trying to be negative at all but this is a forum for the support and education of fellow hobbyists. If no one makes information available, in an easy to digest and concise manner, then how is change supposed to occur?

When something major happens, that affects the purchasing decision of hard working Americans involved in or looking to get involved in the second most popular hobby in the US, behind Photography, there is a necessity for those with applicable knowledge to step forward and make a clear and concise statement that helps others.

If someone is looking at buying an Oceanic and could save money buying an equally constructed, but better valued product, shouldn't they? Or is it better for us to throw our money at a name brand simply because it had good marketing, or in this case was bought and used to bolster sales for a major corporation?
It is important to consider that the product you are buying may not worth the dollar value assigned to it. Jebo and Odyssea are nicely cheap, but I have seen fire damage to one man's home from an odyssea light and I myself was almost electrocuted when servicing a jebo canister. Both are recognized names and while most know that they are poorly manufactured, they are still recognized names.

            Re: OCEANIC/AGA

Oceanic is now being built in somewhere in Wisconsin.

The tanks are now equiped with Starphire glass in the front payne, and use a different style of silicone than before.

All Glass has owned Oceanic Aquariums for many years now (mid 90's).  Central Garden and Pet purchased All-Glass, Coralife, and some other pet/aquatic companies 2-3 years ago, and moved Oceanic from Dallas to Wisconsin to consolidate.

Basically, with Oceanic comes starphire glass front only, glass centerbrace, and a longer warranty.

            That's about it.

The original Oceanic people started a company in 2006 called Deep Sea Aquatics.   They are still located in Dallas TX..

Take a look at them.. Friend of mine just put one of the model 70 RR together for her salt water setup.   I have seen pictures of it.. still looks cloudy... (her 60 sprung a leak and she needed a replacement within hours) and therefore bought this one not knowing that Deep Sea was Oceanic's old crew doing what they know is the best :)

She and her hubby are VERY happy with the QC on that tank :)

Going to go look at it this weekend.
