    Re: Oscar question?

I'm no expert but here are my thoughts..... he was happy at the pet store because he had prob been there a while and got used to his surroundings.... you brought him home toa nice tank... he is prob a little unsure of the area, so he feels safe behind something.... give him some time.... I had 2 bala sharks that hid for about 2 weeks... now they ham it up showing off when you come into the room.... besure to give them lights out time..... I have small clamp on lights with 10 watt bulbs (kinda a night light) that I place at the top of the tank (outside) so they have a little light (moon light) they need time to rest.... once they feel safe they will come out more...   I have a oscar and he is a big show off.... so I am sure your oscar will get the same way.. hope this helps.
Had about 900 gallons now I am tired and selling them off...

      Re: Oscar question?

One thing I have learned about Oscars.. they are highly intelligent.. and with the loss of its playmates will at times hide.  I had one that didnt get up and going again until I gave mine to Chris "souljaa" who gave him a new home in a large tank with others.. then I saw pictures of him/her running around the tank happy again.

I kept Pink convicts with them.   As long as they where introduced together, they didnt care for them as food.  I dont know about yours.. I have seen Oscars eat quite a bit :)

Severums are another hardy tank mate for Oscars, don't worry about them, they are very hardy and will soon become very eager to see you and gooble up anything you offer them, they will even nibble on your finger tips if you let them, soon they learn your fingers are not food and will not try to rip them off your hands any more.... :)

Seriously, they are very good pets and will develope a very calm and peaceful demeanor over time if you provide a stable feeding and visiting program with them.

they are just plain moody too. ours hides for a few hours anytime we do anything in the tank and he has been there for almost two years now.but yes they are smart. mine knows when my brother opens the garage in the evening from work to feed them. they hear/feel the door and start going crazy.

                Re: Oscar question?

This makes me feel better, I was worried. This our first time with owning oscars, I had one in a 75 gallon when I was growing up as a little girl, he was a baby like these then over the years he got HUGE! But he was the sweetest thing ever, he always knew when i was around. He was my Dad's oscar....now its my turn, lol. Im just being a worried fish mom, besides the hiding when i go to feed them they dont come out...so im scared they are not eating....I hope as time passes they claim the tank as theirs like ya'll said...
Also here's another question, how do you get your oscar to know you better, any tricks of the trade? I know right now, they hide in the corner all day....Right now im going to get some lower watt lamps, i think the light is too bright...
Thanks to everyone for helping me too

                  Re: Oscar question?

mine just got used to seeing me in conjunction with the food.  After they get used to you they are very social and will come right up to the top of the water (sometimes out of the water) and eat from your hand.  I think they may be one of the smartest fish I have ever owned and they are one of the few fish that will actually grieve for a missing tank mate and their pet people if we stay away too long.

When my albino (Al) lost his buddy (Tig cause he was a tiger oscar), Al stayed in Tig's final resting spot for nearly 2 weeks before he started moving around the tank again and I don't think he has really recovered yet....These guys have an amazing long term memory.

As far as tank mates go, it really depends on your fish....I think I can put almost anything in Al's tank and he will be fine but a good rule to use if your not sure is: Can it fit in the Oscar's mouth and can it move faster than the Oscar...but for the most part oscar fish are big puppy like babies.

And one more thing, you can give up trying to keep the decor in one spot....the oscars tend to move things around til they are happy with it....my poor black ghost just got his cave moved a good 2 feet down by Al  8O  and in the last few days he has rearranged all the fake plants in the tank.  He made himself a nice little den in the corner with them....nutty fish....gotta luv 'em

                    Re: Oscar question?

I have many different fish with my oscar  he is the biggest of all of them.. He never messes with the others.... thsi is a sectioned off area in my 135 gallon... I am setting up a new tank and have some angel fish in the other part of this tank... so they are kinda close quartered at the moment...

Same thing with mines, but I bought my Oscars in a pair. They hid for a day, now they race around the tank together waiting and watching for me...Pushing their faces against the tank glass, trying to look out for me to feed their hungry butts! 8O

oscarsftw -- welcome to the fishbox :)
You should leave a note in the welcome section and tell us a little about your tank(s) and what you keep :)

Oscars are VERY intelligent  -- they are very cool..
If I ever again keep monster fish, I would like to have some again, but my feel of what I like has changed over time and I like smaller fish more :)
