  • Green water

The 70 gallon tank with no one fish at my daughters school has "green water". It is not close to a window and the lights I told them to leave the lights off for awhile. any other suggestions? I was going to drain the tank let it sit for a day and start over

I'm not sure what would be the best fix for green water, I've never had that experience yet. But, it seems to me a big water change and maybe some salt and extra filtration wouldn't hurt.

        Re: Green water

I agree that water changes will probably help. Draining the tank, not so sure that would do anything but add more problems. How long is the light being left on?

I'm not sure what you mean about "no one fish..." Does that mean it doesn't have any fish?

Green water usually occurs with too much light, or too long a photoperiod. Make sure the light isn't on for more than 10-12 hours a day - although to combat green water you probably want to reduce the light to about 5-6 hours a day for a while.

If it doesn't have fish in it, you could always add some daphnia. They'd clear the green water up very quickly.  :)

Yeah I was thinking the same Mzungu :)  Now just to go find a culture :) -- but a 70g daphnia breeding colony...  man.. there are going to be a TON of food for fish in a couple of days / two weeks time.

I just got 1000 daphnia starter from "Richard Smart" <seertexasbettas>
in about 10 days they cleared out 10g of dark green water and now my fish are loving it.

Richard is on the [s:32c8372415]NorthWest[/s:32c8372415] NorthEast side of Houston but USPO is cheaper than the gas to go get them.

UV sterilizer will get rid of greenwater.
you can get one of those small turbo twist ones which are not that expensive.

You can also try a 48hr blackout, but imo, either daphnia or UV will do the trick.

Hey MB...  If you decide to get some let me know and I will go in with you and pick up a ton myself.  I could drop them all in my guppy tank and within a few days they will have eaten though the algae and they would have become food for several guppies too..
