Cabomba caroliniana

are these floating plants?  i got some for my little 6gallon long ("bookshelf" aquarium), i would like to leave them floating instead of planting

do these survive/grow gloating?

Generally you plant it in the substrate but it will also grow floating (however not as good as the planted).

I agree. With better lighting, it will send roots out when floating. But I would recommend planting it, if possible. Remove a couple rows of leaf nodes from the bottom of the stem, that should help it develop roots, if it doesn't have a good root system already. (I know sometimes cabomba is sold in bunches with no roots.)

thanks guys, i will try to plant them this weekend, what is a true floating plant (meaning i don't want to plant it at all)?  something that will float, provide shade and protection for fry?

For what it is worth....I use them solely as floating plants. It grows quickly and provides great cover for fish. They appear more at ease because of it.

I would say - duckweed,  azolla (aka fairy carpet, fairy moss), frogbit, parrots feather (needs lots of light tho), water sprite - i'm sure there's more...

My anachris does just fine floating.

water hyacyinth and water lettuce are good floaters, but require high light and and illegal to possess in TX

Hornwort is a floating plant - it doesn't produce roots.
