  • First spawn of ABN's

The first spawn in my new Katy residence is a batch of ABN's   .  It looks like there are about 15 or so scattered about the tank, in a piece of floating wood and a few are attaching themselvs to the glass as well.  Since I've never had a pleco spawn before I'm guessing I can just leave them alone and they will be okay.  The only other fish in tank with them are the parents and my Discus, who don't chase anything, not even live brine shrimp.

  That's great! Keep us updated.

I know I've talked to Brownsnoutuk a little about this, and I think I remember him confirming that the female should be removed, and the male will take care of the little ones.

They're already out and about doing little pleco stuff.  I'll try to catch the female but they've made it this far with her in the tank and I don't want to tear up the tank catching her.  There may be more than I think, I see some attached to back glass that I missed in my earlier count.

You don't have to remove the female. She should be no problem.  I left them both in mine when breeding and had no problems.  Once the little ones are free swimming, mom and dad pretty much ignore them.

If you want them to breed more often, you should remove the female and start feeding her in a seperate tank. Then after the babies are hatched, remove the dad to the new tank with the mom in.

                  Re: First spawn of ABN's

This was certainly an unplanned pregancy so I'm not going to make any extra efforts this time around.  If any survive that will be super.  I'm pretty sure the ones that are already attaching and eating off the glass will be fine but the ones still bouncing around may not make it through the night.  I will net out the pair and put them in their own tank in the near future but it seems there's an abundance of ABN's around right now and I'm not quite ready to start running the fry tank race just yet    .

It has crossed my mind, though, that planting some zucchini might not be a bad idea, even with just the 5 that live here.

                        Re: First spawn of ABN's

Oh wow so glad I saw this thread. A friend gave me two completely different catfish saying they wouldn't crossbreed. WHOAH what a suprise I had watching the female spawn up the place. I don't have a place to relocate. So I'm glad to hear that it won't be so bad keeping them there. Again another reason that I'm loving this forum. Good Luck with your little ones.
