  • deposits under center brace - how to remove?

As per a previous post, I am about to upgrade my lights. I also decided to replace the excisting glass tops, probably with acrylic. The ones I have are all white with deposits underneath. I could try various remedies to remove it all, but acrylic would let more light through anyway.

My real issue is that my center brace (like 10" wide - its a 150g with a single brace) also has deposits underneath. Its not like I don't clean it! Every water change I use my glass scrubber to get the worst off. But still the overall effect is that it looks like white glass! How can I clean this safely without hurting my fish?

I dont know what to tell you.. the only real way to get rid of is going to be with a little vinegar...  but to do this you really are going to need to empty the tank out and put it up side down and put a cloth soaked in vinegar on there for a couple of hours to let it melt away the deposits...

Safest is to probably replace it.

No chance for either! Its a huge brace and would require a lot of work to replace. The tank is only 2 years old so it just isnt worth the effort of cutting out major structural components.

And as for emptying it and turning upside down....well that ain't gonna happen either! I have spent 2 years to get it to where I want it in terms of aquascaping etc, and apart from all that the bloody thing must weigh 200lbs empty!

And even if I did get it clean, its going to get dirty again all over! I am going to try with various grades of glass wet and dry glass paper and see if I can polish it off somehow...

I have yet to run into something that I could not remove with a NEW razor blade on the push stick. Not the dingy plastic ones but the metal ones you can get from Sears, Home Depot, O'reilly. Depending how bad it is, you will go through alot of blades, when you start to see it cleaning lines its time to change the blade. Be generous with the blades, trying to make them last longer will only result in more work to get it out evenly.
