  • Calculating tank size...

So I went online to verify how big my tank is.

It is s'posed to be a 150g. Its 72Lx18Wx30H. According to the calculator that is 168g. Now I know that is the exterior dimensions, but do I really have 18g of glass???

    Re: Calculating tank size...

    Here is where I went : http://boonedocks.net/fishtank/ftweb.php

    Water Type..............................Freshwater
    Material................................Glass
    Tank Overhead Shape.....................Rectangular
    Length..................................72.00 in.
    Width...................................18.00 in.
    Height..................................30.00 in.
    Wall-thickness..........................0.75 in.
    Volume..................................168.31 gal (US)
    Tank Material Weight....................487.73 lbf
    Water Volume............................168.31 gal (US)
    Water Weight............................1400.56 lbf
    Approximate Total Weight................1888.29 lbf
    Room Air Temperature....................72.00 °F
    Water Temperature.......................78.00 °F
    Heating Capability Required.............116.58 W
    Approx. Total Fish Length...............108.00 in.
Mass Required for 1 PPM.................635.28 mg

I over estimated everything so you can check on it yourself.
You want to go ahead and remeasure the tank again and make sure that you are not missing a 1/2in here or there etc...
Most tanks I have looked at in my past are never precisely .00 measurements... they tend to be .25 .50 and .75 a lot.

    Thanks

You are to take each and all of your fish and put them end to end.   Once you make 108in total length you have the total amount of fish in the tank.   Personally I think they are under estimating the amount, because what they are saying is that I could have a total of about 11 Frontosa (right number) but they are saying that you can only have about 60 Neon Tetra's in there which is way wrong.  (You could have over 120 Neon Tetra's)  A good medium I would say Approx 18x 6in fish or (which I would say in that tank is still a little low but not bad..)

              Wow!!  I LIKE that page!

Many thanks Zulaab for sharing your find with us!!  :bsty:

Maybe if you think of it as 1 cubic inch of fish the calculations will be more accurate.  That makes it allow for fat fish, skinny fish, tall fish and short fish.

personally I'd like to see a fish shaped like a 1" cube - that'd be cute!  Puffers are the closest thing to that I can think of tho, and mine were cute little guys.  Well, I'm sure they still are, they're just not mine anymore!

I cheated. I took each fish, trimmed 10% off their length at the tail end. They are slower now, and easier to catch, but I can have more in my tank too!

Sorry its Friday, and I leave work soon to go race toy cars like I do every week, and then home in time to watch the Formula 1 qualifying...its almost a perfect day! Actually its also steak and.... day if you are familiar with this holiday!
