  • unexplained ram demise?

well, as some of you know, my ram couple successfully raised wigglers to fry's and then lost them all to a sushi buffet for my tetras (last babies vanished yesterday),  both rams were fine, nothing changed in the tank as far as i can tell (i have not made any changes), today my other half (fishfan) sends me an e-mail and informs me that the male is not looking so good, he is way on top almost vertical, the female seems to be fine, this is really strange because i have had him for at least 6 weeks and he was fine until yesterday, her first husband succumbed to death and lost his dominant status after they had a failed attempt at breeding (that time i only had eggs and no wigglers or fry's), she does not seem to be bothering him at all, do male rams get depressed after spawning and losing babies or eggs or is this just a coincidence?  just thought it was odd, i was really hoping to have her mate with him again so that i can actually get the babies this time!

Seperate him into his own tank asap and see if he changes.  If he gets back to okie she might have chased him.. Standing in the corner of a tank vertical is a move by fish to show they are submissive...  I just dont see another reason for it.  It could also mean he is sick but they dont usually do that if they are sick... they will still goto the corner but they usually stay horizontal.

i moved him a few hours ago, but he died anyway, well, that was a sudden end to the last 10 days of ram egg-wiggler-fry saga :(

she seems to be doing just fine, one of those things i will never know i guess!!!

I don't have an answer for you either, but I had a male do the exact same thing, only mine had not mated yet. I too quarantined him and he did not make it through the night. The female is still doing fine. Fish Gallery had 2 tank fulls when I was in there a couple of weeks ago.

                  Re: unexplained ram demise?

Rams are extremely tricky..I had a beautiful pair and they mated several times. I have pairs that mate several times then after a few attempts at laying and hatching eggs they die. They are really sensitive and, because of their breeding, are typically not very hardy. The stress from warding off threats to their fry is often more than they can handle.

yes, they do seem more sensitive than other fish i have kept, i am thinking maybe i can do a planted nano with one pair (when i get my girl a mate) and see what happens, if my next tank is a large planted, i might get a pair of bolivians, i have heard they are hardier!
