  • Cichlid is holding! Help?

I was wondering if you could give me some advise on when it is ok to remove the fry from my Yellow Labs?  This is her third consec hold in a relatively short period of time. After her last hold, i noticed she' s a lot smaller. i want to remove the fry so that she can start eating again and want to salvage as many Fry as possible. When is it ok to strip the eggs from the holding female? Where can you find the cheapest egg tumbler? What methods do you fish experts reccomend?

I would probably wait about 2wks before stripping.....but if you have to you have to.....ebay or jehmco has tumblers.

I just either use a finger nail to pry the mouth open or just massage the throat while dunking her head in the water.

If you hold her in and can hold her over a cup with water using your thumb and index finger GENTLY press the gills and the pressure go...(Or do it the EK way as listed above) she will spit one to two fry each time you do this.. continue until she does not spit at all anything else...then gently open her mouth up using your fingernail to ensure there is no more, then you could isolate her and power feed her to get big and plumb again before you reintroduce her into the tank.

Great advise guys. Thanks.  I'll seperate her and then fatten her up again. Ialso think i'm gonna try to strip her the "cheap" way first by  and manually removing the fry. Also, let me get this straight. I only need to wait two weeks after the fish spawn and the fry will be alive and able to survive on their own? What do yall reccomend feeding the fry? I  just crush fish food in really small  pieces and put it near the fry.

BBS all the way at first if you can.  I would then switch to High protein / High Plant flake after a while.  Then as they grow older cut down on the protein

I crush high protein flake food for my yellow lab fry.

              Good luck

I would move her to a seperate tank by herself(10 gallon tank is good enough), let her spit that way you save all the fry and keep her in there for another week or so that way she can fend for herself once you introduce her back in the main tank
