  • filtration rate/ changes per hour

    Hello,

I have a 75 gallon with two hob whisper 2 (200 GPH each max.), 660 (170 GPH) and 550 (145 GPH) powerheads with undergravel filter.  I calculated about 9.5 water changes per hour for the tank.  Is this about average for a filtration rate?  What direction should the powerhead outlets point for circulation proper circulation (up, down, sideways)?
    Thanks, sunrise

I would say about 10x turnover rate which is ideal IMO.

As for the powerheads I would try and point them to the water surface.

      ek,

I'm not used to powerheads.  I m only used to 70's style underground filters with the air bubbles.  Its amazing at how quickly the water clears after rearranging the tank.

      thanks, sunrise

I agree....powerheads on the UGF is the way to go!

I have since switched mine to sand with close to 20x turnover rate which keeps the detritus from settling and giving the canisters a chance to filter it all out but the UGF worked great when I had it in my tank.
