  • flowerhorn fry help!!!!

i have 2, one male and one female flowerhorn in a 80g tank, my female flowerhorn seen to laid eggs all the time (atleast onece amonth), but everytime the flowerhorns just ate the eggs before the eggs hatch, this time her eggs hatch, i can see hundreds tiny fry in my tank. since flowerhorns are a very aggresive fish, my questions are: will the parents eat their babies?  should i move the parents or the babies to a different tank?  what should i feed the babies with?  Thank you for any help and advice.

    Re: flowerhorn fry help!!!!

I don't have any specific experience with flowerhorns. I have a texas cichlid and a covict parrot. The pair had babies. The Texas, a very aggressive fish, did not eat the babies. When the babies got to about an inch they started to attack the parents, but the parents still didn't retaliate. I had to move the young at this stage becausethe parents were badly injured. For food i feed all of my fry decapsulated brine shrimp eggs from brine shrimp direct.

When they get bigger, want to trade some hybrid fry? I'd love to cross a one of mine with a flowerhorn.

I think your experience will be similar because the Flowerhorn is mostly of the Cichlosoma genus and the texas is of Cichlisoma.

I am thinking you will see that they will take care of the babies for about 4 weeks... you will need to separate the parents from the young at that time or a little before..  need them finely crushed flake food and if you have a BBS to feed them you will get better growth out of them.

They will eat the babies. I had bunches of babies, but like you I left them in there too long and they ate all of them. I ended giving them away because they were too agressive

          Hope this helps

Probably around 1 to 1.5 months. If you don't seperate them, they will be lunch. That is my experience with them. also, when they get bigger , the dominate one will take out the rest.

tell you the truth, i dunno what to do with them.  first i have them in my 80g tank with both parents, because the babies beating up on the mother, i have to remove most of them to my 55g back up tank, right now my whole 55g tank is full of flowerhorns.  they are very healthy, starting showing colors and dots on their body and red on their eyes.
