  • Mating Rams

These are the new additions to my tank. I was wondering how I would know if they have mated or are mating? Also, do they lay eggs? Would I need to put them in a separate tank?

Yes they lay eggs. Watch for them near a stone or digging a pit. Thats how mine breed.

Move the babies to a seperate tank if you want to raies them. Germans are not good parents..they typically eat the fry.

German Rams - Here is how I got mine back in the day to breed.
      * Water of a pH level of less than 7.0
      * Mine breed in a small 20g tank and I have heard that they will breed very successfully in 10g too.
      * They need a flat surface to lay eggs on.   I used a piece of slate back in the day, they clean it off and lay eggs on it.
      * Temp needs to be high.  Think 80-82..
      * They will breed in a community tank (after the first time they did this I moved them to their own tank)

If you want them in a community tank I could keep a pair together with something like tetra's clouds or something else the schools, but not disturbingly fast fish like danio's that might stress them a little.

Tetras will most likely eat the eggs if the parents don't get to them first.

Mine layed their eggs on an anubias leaf. I just threw them in the tank and they went at it eventually.

At least with mine you can tell it's a pair right away - the only fish I have really "attached" to each other.
Mine normally try to breedt in community tank - watch them cleanning stones and wood, I miss it most of the time. Never could keep eggs there for > 48 hrs.
I used 10gal as a breeding tank, kept female there for ~3 days, male for ~3 weeks, and moved  ~50% fry into community tank in ~2 mnths (still this way)

Angels would eat the eggs too huh?

So, if the mate and lay eggs, let say they lay eggs on a leaf-i should remove the plant to a separate tank and do not transfer the parents to the separate tank?

Mine are good parents, they actually guard eggs (but I've heared not all do from the 1st time, and some never).
For me it was just fun watching male careing for the eggs/wiglers/fry

I know this is an old post but I also have German Blue Rams. They have spawned several times and guard their eggs for 3 days and then eat them.  :(
They just can't get it right. I never tried to move the eggs to another tank. I got them to spawn by accident. I put a clay flower pot in the tank and the
next morning they spawned on the pot. I now have 3 flower pots in their tank. Hopefully one day I will finally have fry. I have 2 mating pairs and 1 lonely male, his mate died about 2 months ago. Now he just stays at the back of the tank and mopes around.  I feel so sorry for him. He only comes out to eat
then back to the corner he goes.
