  • sand filter for swiming pool use

I just scored myself a free sand filter for a swimming pool.  Questions,
    1.  Can it be used on a fish pond??
    2.  If so, what would be the best way to use it?
    3.  Would I need to tie a biological in with it or what do yall think???

When I added pool filter sand to my tanks I didnt even de-dust it and it was surprisingly clean.  -  Recommendation would to be clean it for dust and then add to the pond.

well i was talkin about using the actual sand filter itself to scrub my water.  The water flows through it and it catches all the crud in the water.   Then clean water flows out.  To clean the filter, you just reverse the flow and it cleans the sand.  i was wondering if that could work for the pond?

You could change it out to work for you pond......I would probably add some filter pads on top of the sand.

You could stick a car-washing sponge on top of the sand to keep bacteria in...I think that would work... Are you talking about a sand filter for like an above-ground pool that you would backwash and everything? We had a pool with one of those on it... Good luck with your "Monster Pond!!!" Be sure to post pics when it is finished also!!!

The sand and filter pad will host the bacteria fine but if you are really worried get some cheap dishwashing sponges like the netting type that comes in bright colors and fill it with that.

Make sure whatever you get doesn't have mildew inhibitors or anything like "bacteria free".

I personally would probably replace the sand with them but on top would work fine too.

so no sand.  just pot scrubbers.  and that would be sufficent for a pond filter?  nice.  that wouldnt be hard to do.  thanks.

Yeah because the sand is for keeping the water ultra-clear....which you really don't need for a pond.  You just need something that will keep most of the gunk from building up and to keep the water circulating.  If you did want to keep the sand, you could build and inline section in the hose out of PVC pipe to keep your biofiltration part.

yeah. that would work.  take a big pvc pipe and stuff it with pot scrubbers for the bio.  nice idea.  would the biological take away oxygen in the water??

I don't think so.  It's just like running a canister filter, you are just sending the water through different stages in the filter.

I have seen it done , generally when someone converts a pool to a pond. Swimming pools do not have near as much crud, so back flushing could be required every day or two. When I had a pool ,I backflushed more like every week or two. If you put anything in it but sand I think you will defeat the purpose; that is, you will need to open it to rinse sponges, etc, instead of simply switching to back wash.
I did add a little dia earth, but that would be overkill for a pond.
