  • Power's off... and no generator is coming to the rescue...

Anyone have advice on how to keep my fish alive with no power??

It may be 2 to 7 days before I have power again and I have no generator.  Even if I did, It would be impractical to only power fish tanks with it when there's a fridge, etc...

I have thought about doing daily water changes, but am not sure how much that would stress the fish.

    Tanks are :

29 gal understocked planted freshwater tropical fish tank
100 gal central/south american cichlid tank - pretty well stocked
130 gal Malawi Hap tank - pretty well stocked

    Any thoughts?

What do you have access to?  You really just need to keep the water oxygenated.  I wouldn't feed any while your power is down, that will cut down on the waste in the water as well.

The only thing I could think of is go pick up some battery operated air pumps.  They are available from City Pets on Beechnut at Beltway 8 in Houston, tx.
You might be able to pick up one or two at a store near you, I dont know.

        8O

Every hour or two, get a bucket and dunk and pour 6-10 times per tank.

        Even with the bubble pump.....

          Curse you Humberto!

Well I definitely have the ability to do water changes (with decently high pressure - that should oxegenate the water, yes? The city water is still running.)

Hmm.  The bucket idea doesn't sound half bad.  At least that way they keep their water.

And some of them may pout, but I'm sure they can go without food, they're used to getting fed only 5 days a week.

          Thanks so far!

I'll second the battery air pump and the bucket ideas. The pump for when you're not able to use the bucket. But the bucket is a great idea to keep the water circulating.

As long as you have dechlorinator, I think water changes would also be a great idea. And the high pressure should oxygenate the water, too. But I would do this only once or twice, and of course if you see them having trouble step up the bucket and the water changes.

All in all, you should be fine. Sorry you have to go through this, though!! How frustrating!

If you have access to an Academy or that type of store they carry the battery air pumps and are cheaper than most LFS.     Tried tham and the cheap is as good as the more expensive one.     Look in the fishing department.

cover the tank and keep it dark...you want to keep your fish very inactive to use less oxygen...take a container and dip the water out and put it back in from about 2-3 feet above the tank....do this only if you see your fish in distress from lack of oxygen....otherwise wait for them to tell you they need help....avoid water changes at this point it's easier to get oxygen levels back up with the water that's already established in there....but continue to keep them quiet....don't feed them at this time...as you do this manuver you'll find you have to do it less and less as you build the o2 count back in there.....

You could go buy a power inverter and run a powerhead in the bigger tanks.

Big thanks to all of you who left ideas.  The power was off for three days and there was only one casualty... A male Sunshine peacock :(

Anyway, just fyi: the dark tanks helped (no power -so that was easy, ha), and after the first day they really enjoyed the bucket oxygenating the water. It made an immediate noticeable difference.

                    Thanks again!
