  • New and finally gettting around to posting.

I joined a couple of months ago and have been lurking (and learning a lot).  I had aquariums as a kid and my kids (10 and 6) are starting to get into it.  We set up a 20 gal about 2 months ago.    Have 2 guppies (had some babies but they didn't last long), 2 platties, one molly (mom didn't make it) and a sucker fish (Sucky was the name the 6-year old gave him - original huh ??).    Looking soon to maybe add a 55 gal (I've been watching the adds). Figure I have room for a 55 and a couple of 10's to go with the 20 down the road.
Not many options in the Kingwood area for getting fish, Petsmart, Petco, but I never like the looks of what they have when I go in there.   Any suggestions ?  How long can fish live in the plastic bags if I decide to drive somewhere further to buy fish ?

Well they ship them around the world in plastic bags.....you should be good for any shops in the Houston area.  It really depends on what you are looking for as far as the fish go for the stores to hit.  In your immediate area though, you have Just Fish in Huffman and ABC out on 59 South past 1960.  For cichlids, you have Fish-R-Us up on 242 towards the Woodlands.  If nothing else, check the LFS map on this site and it will give you an idea of what's within your driving distance.

Congrats on finding us....hope you enjoy the site.

      Welcome!

If bagged right, depending on fish, size, how many and size of bag....a fish can live a few days in a bag.

        Welcome to HFB.

I would say if you are looking for tanks, go see Mike at Mike's Tropical Fish off 1960 and Veterans Memorial (actually since he is just north of 1960 its Stuebner Airline.)..
He has a good selection of fish (and getting better)

In a bag (as long as you keep it in a dark shaded environment)  and dont make the fish take a ride of their lives in the plastic bag will survive without a problem in rush hour traffic ride from Katy to Kingwood and back again.  IE about 4-6 hours no problem.  Fish are sold regularity without loss in 2 day shipments.

          Welcome!

You can check out our LFS map, too, for some suggestions on places to go. Althought I think Hanson and Zulaab pretty much covered them.

              Hi, welcome to the box.

In Kingwood you have Animal Ark on Northpark, between Woodland Hills and Lake Houston. I havent had anything from there survive yet, so i stopped going there.

Welcome! I stopped by Just Fish today and she said that she could order a lot of different fish and have them within about a week if you give her a heads up. They are very nice people!!! They are kinda hard to find though...they are on 1960 right after the bridge... Look for the big yellow driving school sign on the left. That's how I always find her. I come from the other direction most of the time though. If you find yourself at 2100, you have gone too far! Anyway, welcome!

Word of advice, Kathy at Just Fish will promise you the world. When it comes time to deliver tho, umm, well, you'll see what I mean when you ask her to get you something in.
As far as pricing goes, you are never going to find a shop that will beat Mike's prices. Toss in the fishbox discount and you are damned near getting the fish at wholesale. The only problem with buying your stuff from Mike's, is, well, Mike. If you can handle snot nosed kids who think they are God's gift to humanity, well, then you should be able to barely handle Mike. Barely. Did I mention BARELY?

It's good to see you have such a high opinion of Mike there SCOTT....LOL.  Plus now ya have to wait for Mike to sell all those dang tanks that he just got in before he will order any new fish....LOL....and that's if he remember's to order what you asked for.  What we are trying to say is ya just got to stay on him....he forgets easily....LOL!!!!

                          Welcome Kidslikefish!

I too joined this hobby with kids about the same age and they do enjoy it.  I've noticed it really teaches them many life lessons as well.  You will find everyone here very helpful and informative.  Hope you and your family enjoy this as much as mine has.

                              Welcome aboard!

Like the others have state fish will be fine in bags for a few days if bagged properly....the only problem is the heat! I use a small cool/ice pack wrapped in newspaper to keep the temps at bay when I go roaming LFSs' which all goes into a big styrofoam box that I have accumulated from all the fish I have bought.
