  • Burundi Frontosa Female Holding...

OK...I'm not exactly new to fish breeding, but not with a mouthbrooder as big as 5-6 inch Frontosa.  I got a small group from Scott a short while back and last Tuesday I noticed one of the smaller ones appeared to be holding.  They are in a 125g with DriftWood and alot of rock and slate.  My plan is to do a good cleaning on Sunday so alot of this will be out of tank.

Here's my question I wish to put the you all.  In your opinion, should I try to strip her? (Takes about 10 days for the eggs to hatch and I dont know how long before last Tuesday she was holding.)  Or, should I move her to another tank, like a 20L and hope she spits?

I want a high yield harvest, so to speak.  My concern is Scott told me she has held before, but never for very long.  So, this is longest she has carried.

The 125g also has various large catfish and plecos.  If she spits in the tank, I know most will get eaten.

I would prolly put her in a 20L for at least two weeks, to the point the babies could survive the time.  I would put a lot of cover in the tank so she would feel good in there.  Stress I would say is prolly the big problem for her.   See if you can scoop her into a 1 gallon pitcher, then transfer her to a tank made from the 125G water so she will not stress there.  Make sure the place has a big cave for her to sit in and I would not press her for her young until at least 14 days into the holding period.  Then strip the young if nessesary..

    My two cents.

Since it is her first time let her hold them, Burundi's are known to be good mouthbrooders so let her do her thing.

I prefer to let them brood their young over stripping....also the market is a bit abundant on burundi's so take it as an opportunity to witness the great joys of the hobby vs. trying to make a quick buck.

I would still let her hold to term....regardless...You aren't gonna become rich selling burundi's so take the opportunity to witness the joys of life. I have mobIt'as that are coming up on sexual maturity and from what I have seen about RonR's mobas people are lining up and coming from all over the state to pick fry and his asking price has gone up and it hasn't effected it none.

Guess what....I don't plan on touching a single mother's mouth....My Ilangi's just started breeding too and I only stripped the first time cause my male was holding the fry but all the other times they have spit in the tank. It's a blast to watch so enjoy it Raul!

              Re: Burundi Frontosa Female Holding...

Ek, you assume alot.  I'm not knew to this, I know I will not get rich on Burundis, no doubt.  My wife and I like these guys alot, to me a Front is a Front.  I think they all look nice.

As to enjoying the hobby, there is no doubt that I do, or I wouldn't have over 20 tanks going.  I've breed a number of fish, whether egg layers or mouthbrooders over the past 4 years....it was the next step in the hobby for me and my wife.

I wasn't planning on selling these...at least not the first batch.  My plan was to salvage the most I can from this batch and grow them out...yes I know it will take a few years, but that's what I want to do.  The next batches can spit in the tank and take their chances.

It's cool to see my Tropheus fry in the tank with the adults.  I have alot of Holey Rock in there, so they have alot of hiding places.  I did strip fry twice, but I let them spit too.  My Chimba Reds spit once already, but only one fry made it.  I let my Rubescent Peacock spit as well in the 75g that they are in.

My tanks inside the house are for my enjoyment, but my tanks outside are setup for growing out fry, which I keep what I want and trade or sell the rest.  Not to get rich, but to supplement the cost of the hobby.  Heck, when I sell on aquabid or to out-of-towners, I get to pay a bill or two with the funds I get.

With me, there is no quick buck.  If I'm selling, its to support the Hobby, which in this case I'm slowly switching over to Tangs, or to put food on the table dude.

I love the Hobby, I love my fish, but my wife and kids come first always and fish come dead last.

I'm not sure why I'm explaining myself...I was going to delete and not post this, but to heck with it.  The point of this post was to ask how to better increase the chances of getting a good survival rate of fry out of this female who has failed to carry her eggs long enough for them to hatch and spit.

I'm not mad, just a bit annoyed.  Ek, you are a good guy!

Didn't mean to annoy you Raul.....I just really don't like stripping fry.

Regardless if you are breeding guppies or tens of thousands of dollar Asian red arowana's....you will still end up broke or at least not rich.   Didn't mean to knock you just the thought of stripping.

I guess what bothered me was some of your comments...

"witness the great joys of the hobby vs. trying to make a quick buck."

Where did I say I wanted to get rich breeding fish?  I thought I said Supplement somewhere in my post.  I'm not a fish broker trying to get rich on fish sales.  I'm into fish because I love it.  It annoyed me that someone else is posting that I'm basically into to make some cash and care nothing for the hobby....now I am a little upset the more I think about it.

I do appreciate oppinions very much so and posting my concern about this female Front was a way for me to share on the Box my current interest in one of my fish.  I appreciate your views on stripping.  I don't feel as strongly about it as you do, but that doesn't make either of us right or wrong.  Just our opinions are a little different.  I don't hold nothing against you for having a different opinion.

Can you appreciate where I'm coming from with this?

Yeah I see....I guess what I thought out in my head didn't sound good on the board.

I was not insinuating that you are out to make a quick buck...just stating in general that it won't  make anyone rich. IMO I don't see any reason to strip fish other then to sell if you don't wanna sell them then why strip them? Just my opinon....

I guess I should right a disclaimer with my opinions cause this is not the first time someone thought I was attacking them with my opinion....Sorry Raul, I see you and everyone here as a friend and don't mean to attack anyone.......does everyone assume that I am attack them when I reply to their thread?

                        Re: Burundi Frontosa Female Holding...

Now that is a opinion I can appreciate and consider.  Frontosa is new for me, so I'm asking opinions.  Whenever I'm dealing with a fish I had not had before and they are breeding, I personally like to see all the fry make it....just the way I am.

From what Yesper and you have stated, I will prolly move her Sunday to another tank by herself and wait to see what happens.

                        Thanks ek.

                          Re: Burundi Frontosa Female Holding...

The nursery tank is a really good idea as well that a lot of people utilize since it gives the mother time to herself to care for her young....but then again with that there is a down side too....the move could stress her even more and cause her to swallow.

If its more than a couple of people that have thought you have, and you aren't trying to, then you may want to read what you post before you submit.  Sorry if I was over reacting, just got to me.  I've been enjoying the hobby for ..... dang, over 11 years now and I'm still learning stuff every day.  I hope I never get tired of it.
