  • Clay Pots vs. Slate/Rock

My question is...Is it better to use either when breeding rams (bolv & german) convicts and firemouths?

I have gravel, slate and various round rocks with the rams.
I have moon sand, slate and various size rocks with the firemouths & convicts.

I love clay pots but IMO the fish you are trying breed breed on anything.

I have had convicts breed on rocks, clay pots, inside ceramic decorations, inside those plastic castles, on the side of plant bases, petrified wood, etc....convicts are like guppies, throw them together and bam! babies.

Rams I had lay their eggs one big leaves but they also layed eggs on the wood too.

Out of the 40+ people that viewed this...you are the only one that replied....Thank YOU!!!

I'm not going to worry about getting the clay pots then. If they breed they breed is how I'll look at it!

Check out jklntx's 2 thread on rams - german and bolivian. He's got a picture of the germans' eggs lying right on the substrate. :)  Also explains where the bolivians laid their eggs.

          Yes, I saw that.

I was wondering which have produced the best results (pots or slate). I think I'll leave my tank be...and let them spawn on whatever they choose that's already in the tank.

            Re: Clay Pots vs. Slate/Rock

CFL -  My convicts are right now breeding constantly in my little caves I made for them.

Take two pieces of slate (mine are 4x4in) and I glued them together to for a 90 degree L

Once its harden insert in tank.

Note in the picture that there is the lose bottom piece of slate...  I removed it because it didnt work. babies will find their way underneath it and dirt too..   The Parents really loved it once it was gone.
By putting it up against the front glass.. the convict keep breeding in it and I get to see all the action with the eggs... its like a door into their world and they dont care that I am there...

              Re: Clay Pots vs. Slate/Rock

              Hmmm

So as long as they have a "cave" type environment they'll lay right on the gravel...good to know!

Because petco has put their tanks up for $1 per gallon...now I have to get another 55gal probably today I will probably house mostly convicts because their reproduction rates are so high and I love the lil' babies!!! *can someone say MTS*

                  Re: Clay Pots vs. Slate/Rock

CFL -  They will lay the eggs in the roof.. They dont lay them on the bottom slate.  When spawning they simply turn their bodies against the sides and lay the eggs there.   I have a hollow out log in the aquarium that used to to be the other pair in the tank and they used to roof rather than the sides or bottom.   So I know when it comes to Pinks for sure they lay their eggs off the ground and then put the young on the ground as soon as they have hatched.

PS the slate.. i got it at Home depot (9 pieces for $4.95) and then you will need to goto the LFS and pick up a small tube of silicone.
