  • Is my smallest Bolv Ram being bullied?

Before doing my water change last night, I noticed the smallest of my 4 rams was acting a bit stressed. (i.e. breathing heavier in a remote corner away from everything else). I've noticed her being chased away by the larger rams since I got them (on Sunday). I also noticed last night when I was feeding them, that the larger ones would chase her away if she tried to eat. This morning I get up and she's behind the filter, at the top, sorta with her mouth out of the water breathing the same way. What gives? Has she been bullied to the point of death?? There are no other signs besides the more heavy breathing from her only.

    Test prior to water change:
    Temp 80-82 F
    pH 7.4
    Ammonia 0
    Nitrite 0
    Nitrate 5

    55gal: 2 Bol. Rams-1 4-Line Pim. Cat-10 Comunty Fish-1 Cmn? Pleco-1 Albino Bstlnose Pleco

Might be something in the water change....tap water was used? Could also be from bullying.

Yeah, could be she's just not strong enough to defend herself and they've worn her out.  :(

EK: She was acting like that prior to the water change...and it's just gotten worse as the hours pass.

MZ: Yeah, that's what I'm thinking it is...poor lil' thang :(

JK: I have 1 male 3 females (from what I can tell). 55gal

As of now...I took off work for a "emergency" and went to walmart. Got a 5gal hex with filter. Filled it up with the water from the 55gal, and moved her. When I moved her I noticed her top fin had a little gunk/small amount of mucos looking stuff and wasn't moving as it used to. She had moved back to the bottom of the tank (away from the filter) and her breathing looked a little better. I added a sprinkle of "quick cure" in the tank with her.

I'm back at work now, Cross your fingers for a rapid recovery  ray:

Prayers going out for you... pick up some Melafix, it assists the fish in recovery of any wounds and does a really good job at it.

Once she will take food again, start the little one on a healthy feeding schedule of bloodworms and other high protein diet allowing her to gain some weight and become a little bigger and stronger :)

I would keep her in there for 2-3 weeks minimum.

Re: Is my smallest Bolv Ram being bullied?

With Melafix I did a water change every 3 days and then add Melafix to replace what I took out.
Then after 3x3 days I left the tank as is for about two weeks (yes I was a bad person) but by the end of that my ram was eating strong and gaining all his colors back.. Very happy

Some times being bad is actually being good.

Re: Is my smallest Bolv Ram being bullied?

In this instance it was a BAD thing..  because Algae started to grow in the tank, and today as I broke the whole thing down and cleaned EVERYTHING but the filter, I took a reading of the water... I was running 80ppm on the NO3.... It was bad..  none of my other tanks have more than 20ppm.
I changed the tank from a QT substrate less tank to one with pea gravel, and some plastic plants for the Ram to live among.
By this evening its got good colors and swimming around the tank all happy :)  Ofcourse with 0ppm of NO3 it prolly helps !!!
Now I am starting to think.. what do I do with this fish.  He is the sole survivor of my plague I had in my planted tank, in which all but this guy died.   He is looking great today in his 5G tank, but dare I add some mates or do i just give up and give him away.  He is a ballon German Ram.   I thinking I should call him Connor MacLeod.

The decision is up to you.
If you do decide to get rid of him let me know.
I have a couple or red German rams & would love to see them mate.

                        Got bad news

I got home friday and added melafix. I left to go get a canopy for the 75gal tank...got home and she was in fishy heaven

The tiger barbs are all alive and well. I moved a male molly over to the tank because he was getting beatin' by the other male in the 55gal.

All is well in the 5gal and my other 3 rams are doing great.

To be honest, when I woke up friday morning to see her acting sick my mood immediately changed :( I took it out on the whole family cause my fish was sick! They never actually knew what exactly was wrong with me...but I was on a rampage around the house that morning!!
