I've used the river gravel or pea pebbles in my case, they are fine but i find it too big for my fish to move around ... i've use play sand since then and loving it ... just make sure you rinse them thoroughly as they do have lots of dirt/dust ... gd luck with your new setup

I've used them both with no problems.  Like h0nkzz said, be sure to rinse well.

i have tried both sands....paver and play....i prefer the paver sand for it's a slight bit bigger than the play sand and rinses faster too.....
