  • Whisper 100 problems

I bought two weeks ago a Whisper 100, and now one side barely pushes any air out.  Its to the point where it will barely make bubbles on the bad side and with an airstone 0 comes out.. the other side works fantastic.  Anyone seen this issue before ?  anything I can do to quickly fix this issue ?
The Whisper like I said is about 2 weeks old.

Yea,  the rubber diaphram gets a crack in it as it ages (on the shelf) and when you start vibrating it the crack turns into a hole.

It could be the built=in check valve or just a poor seal on the diaphram but usually it a bad diaphram.

Take it back where you got it and exchange it for one that works.

If you can't get the thing replaced, let me know, I have a bunch of replacement parts and more than likely I have some diaphrams the right size.

      Re: Whisper 100 problems

I bought it online, which means I need to ship it back to them, or I can send it back to Tetra with $5.00 for shipping and handling.
I am taking 10 days of vacation, starting next Wednesday so maybe next weekend I might just drive down to Texas City to meet you and see your incredible betta setup and have it fixed then.  I will pull it apart over the next few days and see if I can see what the problem is so I can post it.
Thank you very much for your help :)

        Re: Whisper 100 problems

PhishPhreek,  Tonight the other side broke down and I decided to open the whisper 100 up and check on it.   It has like you said both sides cracked diaphragms.  I emailed Tetra to see if they would just be so nice to ship me another set of Diaphramgs.   If they tell me no but to check at a local store I am going to run up to the LFS and see if they have some later this week, because I am desperate need to get them running again.  I have an old Aqua pump, and its barely running (I am thinking the same issue exits with it too.)  I am wondering if having wooden airstones is what is causing them to break ?  I dont know.. just wondering.   In a couple of days I am having surgery and I am taking some time off with this in mind.   Like I said I might take you up on coming down to your place in Texas City for if for nothing else just to see the Betta house.  (haha)   We will have to see :)

          Re: Whisper 100 problems

usualy the diaphram failures are due to fategue - old age

I'd love to show off a new betta bunkhouse but I moved a year ago and then wound up in the hospital and so my new fish room is still only half complete.   The bunkhouse I have been putting off untill I have some juvie bettas to growout.  and I lost most of my breeders and all my young stuff so I'm just now starting over.   But I do have some beautiful bettas I just imported from thiland for breeders.

Do you know of any local LFS that carry the spare parts incase Tetra will not ship me any diaphragms ?  I noticed online a "repair" kit is $3.00 so they cannot be that expensive to get in a store I am sure.

On another note.. I am sorry to hear all the badness.. did the Betta's die off from old age and you just have yet to replace them ?
I am always interested in seeing fish in tanks :)

Wooden airstones are usually used in protein skimmers...I'm not sure if using them is causing any problems...maybe someone else will know.  :)

                Re: Whisper 100 problems

I quit breeding when I stated planning for the move - took over a year to unload my old house and make the necessary repairs to the "repo" house that I bought.  So all my stock was old when I moved.  Then I had a combination of errors and sickness and in their weakened condition I lost about a third, while I was in the hospital I asked a buddy to pick up the remainder and care for them.   So another move and another environment and a few more were lost and after 2 months they were passed on to another frinend and a few more losses and I have not picked up the few that remain as it was easier to buy some new stock.

                  Re: Whisper 100 problems

I am sorry to hear of all the pains you have had to go though.  I have seen some awesome pictures of your old fish obvious, and always impressive.  I have always wanted to see a breeders setup.  Part of me still wants to get back into the "sport/fun/joy" of breeding fish again.
When you have it all setup or should you need help I would love to assist with setting up another "bunk house".  I find it absolutely fascinating :) but I am sure that you have at least 10 others here who would love to give you a hand too :)

BTW : I called City Pets and they have a 5 dollar repair kit for the Whisper 100 and it is going to cost me 5 dollars to ship the whisper to Tetra... it will be faster for me to just buy the kit.

Well I went to City Pets... they had the repair kit, but for the Whisper 100 (old square model) which is nowhere CLOSE to the new Whisper 100.
I had contacted Tetra about their product and they are shipping today what looks like free of charge the two diaphragms I need.. hopefully within the week I will have the replacement kit and installed and life will be wonderful again.
