  • need some help deciding

Ok.  Heres the deal.  Ihave a 55 that is in the garage.  I finally convinced the wife to let me set it up.  Been thinkin about doing an Oscar but Im not sure.  Lookin at the Green Terrors.  Sound nice. Heres what I want and maybe yall can help.  I want a male and female fish that will spawn, can both go in a 55 gallon, get bigger than typical african cichlid and are carnivors.  I wanna watchem eat feeder fish, crickets or that kinda stuff.  What do yall think

    Re: need some help deciding

Finally a post where I can speak from experience (I'm new to African cichlids). It's been years since I have kept either, but here is what I can remember about them.

I can tell you this much from my experiences with Oscars.

    The Good News:

They have tons of personality, and are very easy to train for hand feeding.
They are very beautiful and graceful fish to watch.
They are a very hardy speices and are easy to keep without alot of focus on the watertable.

    The Bad News:

They grow fast and get very big....
They eat anything they can fit into their mouths.
They are pigs when it comes to eating, leaving dead fish parts all over the tank.
They will move all your plants and decorations if they are not nailed down.

    Now for the Green Terror

A very beautiful fish and again, packed with personality.
Not as easily trained in my experience as the Oscar but still somewhat people friendly. (Not Shy)
A lot better about not eating all his tankmates.

I would say go with the Green Terror for what you are looking for. But, you would also enjoy the Oscar as well, if you don't mind the extra aquascaping duties and the extra filter maintenance...

The Jack Dempsey is another good looking well mannered (to some extent) choice to consider.

'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

How about Firemouths and Blue Acara ?
The Blue Acara looks similar to the Green Terror, but not as aggressive as the Green Terror.

No I dont know where you can get a pair.   Sorry, but I am sure that on this board someone is going to run across them sometime soon and let us all know.

The last time I saw some I was on another continent.  I had a friend (in Europe) who had a pair in a tank with a pair of Firemouths and a pair of Krib's...  The tank they where kept in was a 250L tank (65G approx) with lots of wood, plants and clay pots (breading).  The three pairs of fish went to town in this tank, each having their territories and they all three bread quite well.

Now he never moved any of the breading fish so he didn't get a lot of young making it to maturity, but that was never his intentions.

I suppose the best you can do is call some of the dealers listed here on the HoustonFishBox and ask if they have any or know of any that deals with them.

Let us know how things turn out :)
