  • Eheim 2213

For those of you who have been reading my frustrations with my new tank setup, I have had cloudy water for the last 2 weeks, and I always felt this is something that with proper filtration could be fixed.   Last night after reading alot about current filters out there I decided to buy a Eheim 2213 and I installed it during a very hard game 7 Houston vs Jazz to watch.  This morning I woke up to seeing something I have been waiting a while for... not crystal clear waster but ALOT better looking tank.   Now when the bio filtration takes hold I now believe I will have crystal clear water again :)

From what I have read and now experienced on my own Eheim are awesome filters...  they are getting my vote of confidence...

Thanks again HoustonFishBox for a great place to research and learn :)

Eheim are wonderful...if you can, over filter with them...the gph in the ads are quite innacurate (gph on box is more reality). The results are astounding...have never needed additives...charcoal , etc., and have yet to see a cloudy tank.

The filter material came in an already setup media basket.  Where do I add Purigen ?  and where do I find this product ?

I am running now two filters... the old one and the new one ....  I am not going to remove either one as I am thinking I am better off over filtering than just "running enough"

You can find Purigen at pretty much any LFS. You can purchase a filter media bag, or make one out of pantyhose or something. Then just place it in the media container. If you don't have room, you can always remove some of the eheim media. Here's a link to Seachem's info on Purigen, and to help you ID it if you're shopping:

Glad you kept the old filter running! Wouldn't want you to have to start the cycle all over again!  8)

                Re: Eheim 2213

Well the old one is a Aqua Tech, Walmart version of a Marineland Penguin 330, sans 10% filtering power and no biowheel, making it good for up to 60G tanks.   Instead of replacing it I am adding the Eheim 2213 into the fray and allow for both to do their job.  The Eheim will end up with the better Bio Filtering because the Aqua Tech does not have a good area for bio to grow which the Eheim does.  (This is why you should buy the bio wheel for the Aqua Techs to make them just a lesser Penguin.)

I will look for it at my LFS (Fish Land or T&T reptile and Fish) since you are near the same area I live (I used to live in 77063) you might know of both stores.

                  Re: Eheim 2213

The thing about Purigen is that it absorbs ammonia and so your filter is not really developing much bacteria.

Nothing absorbs ammonia.....it binds it so it becomes less lethal to the livestock and the bacteria can still process it.

                      "Purigen™ is a premium synthetic adsorbent "

"Purigen™ controls ammonia, nitrites and nitrates by removing nitrogenous organic waste that would otherwise release these harmful compounds"

Absorbs, adsorbs, not much difference really.

If it binds it so that that bacteria can still process it, like Prime does, then it ought to say that. If it removes it, like Ammo-Lock, then you are starving your bacteria and there is a question about whether you will ever actually completely establish the cycle.

I have not used Purigen, though I've used Prime for years and years successfully, and I've heard many times of cycle failure using Ammo-Lock. I know that whether it locsk up harmful products or removes them is a critical point. In reading the info from the link posted, it seems that it removes ammonia, nitrites and nitrates. Perhaps their info is just not clear.

I ended up using Kent Marine Organic Adsorption Resin, and what a wonderful product it has been.  I will say this.. when I am ready to throw away the Kent Marine stuff (Because it has already been regenerated a couple of times) I am going to pick up the Purigen™ and see if it makes a difference.  I love the fact my water now is crystal clear, rather than the stuff it has been in the past.

But yeah I use in my planted tanks which I actually dose nitrogen so if that were the case my plants would starve on that nutrient.

Can anyone describe, sketch, or send me to a handy demo link of the best way to use the quick disconnects that come with the Eheim classic canisters? The setup info that comes with them is kind of sketchy. I was used to my Ecco, which had the disconnects right at the top of the canister for both lines.  Where is the best place to put the disconnects with the Classic, to make for easy opening/ cleaning ? Most of the stuff I've looked up tells you how to START one, but not how to stop and reopen one with minimal mess.

I put both of mine close to the canister but still accessible while in the cabinet or tank stand.

What I like to do is stagger them so the "lets just say" intake is a bit further from canister then the output and then I put it so that the male end of the QuickDisconnect is facing one way and on the opposite hose the other way. Keeps the confusion at a minimal when going back with the canister.

What do you mean START one? If you are talking about going about cleaning....

I just close the valves and unplug....take to sink and rinse everything(I run multiple filters so I don't worry about cleaning off the ben.bacteria) after that I fill it all back up with water all the way to the top! keep the output valve open and the water will actually flow upwards and fill the lines.

After that close the lines and wipe it down.....take back to tank and reconnect the hoses and open the output side then the intake....if you didn't siphon the tank below the intake strainer then it should have held a siphon/vacuum and when you open the intake side it should fill the canister even more along with the lines.

I usually wait a minute or two then plug the filter back in.
