  • CYCLING A 105 GAL

Got it up and running yesterday 03-20-07.
Used stress coat then stress zyme.
Today i used live bacteri from my 90 gal sump.
I'll probably cycle for 5 to 7 days. Should i after 3 to 4 days get some small cheap fish to help with thi task.
and is there any other tips that could help????.
Of course i'll test the water paramenters prior to restocking.
any and all info would be greatly appreciated.Looking for this to be painless as possible.
                                                 THANKS IN ADVANCE.

    Re: CYCLING A 105 GAL

I have used Bio-Spira with great success!

Other then that the only other method I have used was to swap canisters from one of my other tanks for an "Instant cycle".

As long as you are showing some sort of NitrAte and none of the others you should be good to go!

      Re: CYCLING A 105 GAL

I had zero deaths cycling a new 100 gallon overnight using Ek's advice.
I used old media filter and some biospira...worked wonders. (:

      Hope it helps.

        Re: CYCLING A 105 GAL

nothing beats old filter media, i also love putting plants in because if anything tries to spike they lower the spike, and i tend to stock pretty heavy most of the time (no problems as of yet) so same advice, old media is best

Yup, yup. Just to add - make sure you have something producing waste (ammonia) in order to keep the bacteria going if you plan on leaving the tank empty for a while.  :)

I've read several articles about using shrimp to cycle a tank.

They say get frozen raw shrimp to use to initially generate ammonia.  One per every 15ish gallons.

              Re: CYCLING A 105 GAL

I have found that Kents Ecco-Start, and Marinelands BioSpira to be the best chemical methods of rapid cycling a tank.

The best performer is to use a filter that has been in service on a stocked tank for several weeks.

Like mentioned before, if you plan to leave the tank empty for some time, be sure to feed like everyother day or so to keep bacteria alive and well.

Wouldn't buying Ammonia from the hardware store acclomplish the same thing in less time, higher ppm's and without the stinky smell?
