  • Sexing rams?

I was given a "pair" of rams. Trouble is I think I have 2 males! I have enough space to accomodate 2 pairs if necessary, but first I need to figure out what I really have.

    Any advice?

Females are usually less colorful than males...but then again if you have two of the same sex, can't really compare, huh?!    I'll look around for some photos, if you'd like...

      Oh yeah, forgot to ask...

Are they German Blues, Gold, or Bolivian? (or any others I don't know about)

        Re: Sexing rams?

        Hmm, just found this...

"A sure fire way of sexing your Rams is to check the black blotch in the fish's side. If there are blue spangled dots in and around it, that's a female. Those with no dots present are males."

"'Blue rams' can be sexed using a variety of characteristics. The males
are generally larger (most prominent in adults), have slightly longer
fins (dorsal) and lack the blue spangles in the black mid-lateral spot
        found in the females...
"As for the Bolivian rams, the differences are more subtle. Males
generally have longer extensions on the upper and lower rays of the
caudal fin, however, this works only for adults and some of the cultured
stock may sport these extensions in both sexes..."

        Ok, I'll stop posting, I promise.  :)

The one that lays the eggs is a female
and if they hatch, the other one is a male.

          General rules
          The males are bigger
          The males are more colorful
The males have longer fins and/or rays
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

The dots thing has worked for me...then again it has failed me. Does one have a red belly and the other not? Can you post pics?

                methinks they are both boys...

So if so, where can I get nice (but not show quality) females?

                  Re: Sexing rams?

Hey, I think both of your German Rams are females. In Fact the tip of their dorsal fin is rounded. I have a pair of Rams and the male has a pointed dorsal fin in the back. If you add a male with those females a pink spot will appear on their side.

Hmmm, where'd the posts go? I agree with you, I think they're both boys. IMO, the top one might be a girl, but I think it looks more boy-ish.

Is there any pink / Purple on the side sometimes?

                        Got them both for $18
